VegfestUK organisers are thrilled to see Tobias Leenaert, an outstanding Belgian activist, come to London in October to present some insights into his highly successful campaigns to get people to go vegan or reduce their meat and dairy consumption.
Tobias Leenaert (born in 1973) is the founder and CEO of the Belgian non-profit organisation EVA, which informs people about the benefits of eating less or no animal products. He studied English and Dutch Language and Literature and Anthropology at the University of Ghent, and after graduation he founded EVA, which in 2005 was probably the first vegetarian organisation in the world to receive structural support from its national government. EVA is the organisation behind the successful Thursday Veggieday (Donderdag Veggiedag) campaign, and is all about mainstreaming plant-based eating in a positive and encouraging way.
Tobias Leenaert recently held two lectures, at the Strategic Vegan Activism training in Berlin in May 2015 – these two videos will give you a little insight into his work (credit Martin Smedjeback for videos).
Tobias said, “I am thrilled to speak about effective vegan communication and strategy at the London Vegfest in October. Our global movement is making great progress, and it is important at this time to think strategically about spreading our message.’’
VegfestUK organiser Tim Barford noted, ‘Tobias is a very interesting global activist and very successful. He focuses more on effective and results-based campaigning than focusing on ideology or even 100% vegan. Tobias would most likely subscribe to the concept that it would be better, easier and more likely to achieve a ‘vegan-ish’ or ‘98%’ vegan ‘norm’ than to try and aim for the ‘100%’ vegan option, on the grounds that this would more effectively reduce animal suffering, improve people’s health, ensure a more sustainable global food production and - crucially - reduce global emissions and rainforest destruction dramatically. Tobias is eloquent, articulate and persuasive, and in our opinion the ideal ‘foil’ to the growing demand within the vegan circles for 100% vegan perfection. Tobias presents a compelling case that is shared by many many people and we are thrilled to be able to give him a platform to present his approach in more detail. The purpose of this summit is to provide balanced, respectful debate and Tobias brings this to the table in abundance, providing inspiration and guidance to activists across the globe. Thanks for coming, Tobias, we appreciate your presence and input.”
Tobias will be joined at the Summit by Professor Gary L. Francione, author Dr. Melanie Joy, activist Ronnie Lee, presenter Victoria Moran, author Kim Stallwood alongside a number of other enthusiastic vegan activists.
