A lovely wee trip to the Edinburgh Vegan Festival

A lovely wee trip to the Edinburgh Vegan Festival

| by Editor

What a smashing weekend it was in Edinburgh! The inaugural Edinburgh Vegan Festival descended on the city centre location of the Roxburghe Hotel, with so many in Edinburgh in party mood on the eve of the world-famous Fringe – nice wee combination for some valuable time away from our office routine!

We’ve mentioned the Edinburgh Vegan Festival – a largely grassroots, community event – a few times on our Facebook, Twitter and our blogs, and it wouldn’t have gone unnoticed how many untold hours the organiser Louise Pinchen has worked to make this happen, including a recent fundraiser she’s started to reduce the deficit incurred from a surprise hefty bill from the Edinburgh Council due to the city centre location of the event. We’re so glad to see her graft paying off handsomely on the day with altogether 1,200 visitors lining up in a queue extending all the way from the hotel to round the corner of Charlotte Street. At one stage a 1-in-1-out policy had to be implemented due to the unexpected large turnout. Plus many stallholders we spoke to had a lovely time attracting plenty of attention from the large amount of visitors too! So Louise – this is a huge sign of support for your efforts and your brainchild to continue – please continue what you’re doing and don’t let the financial setback hold you back from what you believe in!

The Roxburghe Hotel is a nice cosy venue for a first-year event, with a sun-baked courtyard in the middle for people to soak up the beautiful sunshine and enjoy some proper vegan food porn from the festival.

How could we write a blog review of the whole gig without tantalising pictures of what we’ve eaten? Let’s begin with vegan versions of cheese, which many dairy addicts consider indispensible. Ami from Tyne Chease has come up trumps with her unique cheeseboards – all 100% vegan with no animal suffering involved.

The sweet tooth in us were itching for something sweet to tickle our taste buds with, as we geared up for a whole feast ahead. We first set our sights on these crispy and sweeter-than-sweet baklavas from Middle Eastern vegan food vendor Green Olives:

And what about a banana-based pick-me-up morning breakfast smoothie from the local Bread Street Brasserie?

And vegan editions of scones – a traditional Scottish favourite tea time snack – from the 100% veggie restaurant Henderson’s of Edinburgh?

Happy Pumpkin Vegan Bakery – well, hard to find the words to describe how amazing these vegan cakes are, both on a visual and taste level:

Then a lovely chat with the adorable Almighty Foods team from Dundee – OMG, their nut butters and raw vegan chocolates are just out of this world!

Talking about being happy and enjoying vegan cakes – Nic’s Vegan Kitchen wraps up everyone’s favourite mood-booster in cute-looking gift boxes:

Vegan food is a major part of convincing people that it’s unnecessary to inflict suffering and death on animals. But what about clothing and footwear? Freerangers demonstrate resoundingly that we can dress cool and smart as vegans without wrapping ourselves in animal parts:

What about these sorbet lookalike vegan candles from Veggie Burners? Absolutely beautiful in our books:

We’re also very happy to network with new people and speak with many of our friends. The lovely stallholders on the day included: TheVeganKind, Vegan Lifestyle AssociationKoko Dairy Free, Vegan Tuck Box, Lush, Fentiman’s, Vegetarian for Life, The Vegan Society, Viva!, Ananda Foods, Juice WarriorGillie Food, Missy’s Vegan Cupcakes, Bohemian Chic MineralsSea Shepherd, Global Fusion, Arbonne, Population Matters, Raw Vegan Life plus many others... Also our great friends Craig Tannock and David Scott who’ve helped plenty with planning for Vegfest Scotland, as well as Roddy Hanson who organises the Northern Vegan Festival and has helped us put out untold amounts of flyers...

There were also half a dozen talks going on at the same time by some interesting, dynamic speakers on various subjects of veganism, including: vegan ultra-runner William Robertson, health educators Bill Tara and Marlene Watson-Tara, activist Chrissy Leyland from The Vegan Approach, author Ruth Hawe of Holy Cow, plus Yaoh and VegfestUK/Vegfest Scotland manager Tim Barford who spoke on the benefits of hemp.

The party for vegans in Scotland doesn’t just end here – we’ve given out loads of flyers for Vegfest Scotland to many kindred souls at the festival who simply can’t wait to try the vegan lifestyle at home afterwards and get inspired further at the inaugural Vegfest at the SECC in Glasgow on December 5th 6th. To keep abreast of the latest updates on this blockbuster, follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Tickets will go on sale from Monday September 28th on the show website.

Onwards and upwards for a vegan future!
