POLL on Single-Issue Campaigns – Taking the Animal Rights movement Forwards / Backwards?

POLL on Single-Issue Campaigns – Taking the Animal Rights movement Forwards / Backwards?

2015-09-14
| by Editor | Posted in Polls

Over the years, there’ve been many high-profile Single Issue Campaigns (SIC's) for animals with support from a number of celebrities as well as people who’re not yet vegan but sympathetic towards animals.

These SIC’s range from abolishing fox hunting, dolphin slaughter, kangaroo and dog meat trades, to horse racing, fox hunting, foie gras and fur, to name just a few. They’ve regularly made it into mainstream media stirring up plenty of emotions, interest and sympathy in the subject of animal protection.

Some SIC’s however do not carry a ‘go vegan’ message so the following questions have been raised:

- Do they simply imply that it’s fine to shift one form of animal exploitation to other forms?

- Are they simply attempts by national animal groups to generate donations from their supporters, or are they a good thing, highlighting extreme cases of cruelty to animals, changing the nation’s conscience and in some cases help fund vegan outreach?

- Do SIC’s that focus on animal abuse happening in certain countries carry racist overtones, or are we able to use these SIC’s to highlight animal abuse in our own countries?

- How do SIC’s sit within the realms of intersectionality? Can they be consistent with a true social justice movement, or can they cross the borders into the realms of sexism, ageism, ableism and homophobia?
