Prof. Gary L. Francione: the Problems with Welfare Reforms & Single-Issue Campaigns, & Why VEGANISM is a moral imperative

Prof. Gary L. Francione: the Problems with Welfare Reforms & Single-Issue Campaigns, & Why VEGANISM is a moral imperative

| by Editor | Posted in Vlog

This is Prof. Gary L. Francione's 2nd  talk at VegfestUK London 2015, as a sequel to his first talk "Introduction to the Abolitionist Approach to Animal Rights”:

This presentation will focus more in depth on why WELFARE-REFORM CAMPAIGNS and SINGLE-ISSUE CAMPAIGNS are morally flawed and counterproductive. It will also discuss why animal advocates should engage in creative, non-violent vegan advocacy in order to shift the paradigm away from animals as property and toward animals as moral persons.

"Animal welfare reforms are not 'baby steps'. They are big steps in a backward direction. The problem is use, not treatment. The goal is to abolish animal use, not to regulate treatment. The means to the goal? Go vegan and educate others about veganism."

Board of Governors Distinguished Professor of Law and Katzenbach Scholar of Law and Philosophy, Rutgers University in New Jersey, Prof. Francione volunteered as an activist lawyer in the 1980s and 1990s with many animal organisations and worked on welfare reform campaigns and single-issue campaigns. He came to the conclusion that these efforts were counterproductive and he formulated what is now called the Abolitionist Approach to Animal Rights, which focuses on veganism as a moral imperative.

Prof. Francione has been teaching animal rights theory for over 30 years. He has lectured on the topic throughout the world. He is the author of numerous books and articles on animal rights theory and animals and the law. With his colleague and partner, Adjunct Prof. Anna Charlton, he co-directed the Rutgers Animal Rights Law Clinic until 2000, making Rutgers the first university to give students academic credit for working on actual legal cases involving animal issues.

Prof. Francione is the co-editor (with Prof. Gary Steiner) of a series, Critical Perspectives on Animals: Theory, Culture, Science and Law, published by Columbia University Press. With Prof. Charlton, he regularly teaches courses at Rutgers on animal rights, animal law, and a cooperative course concerning the rights of humans and non-humans.
