Some reflections on the UK vegan scene, following a weekend at the West Midlands Vegan Festival

Some reflections on the UK vegan scene, following a weekend at the West Midlands Vegan Festival

| by Editor

Got back from the West Midlands Vegan Festival 2015 #WMVF15 and it was wonderful!

Massive shout out to all who took part - everyone. It was buzzing both days and could literally see the veils being lifted all around the show – these grassroots vegan events are changing the face of the UK big time.

Wonderful to see genuine volunteer led creative effective vegan education and outreach going on.

Much as I love the whole grassroots vegan movement - I also love the national UK vegan groups too. They are often criticised, but the presence of groups like Animal AidThe Vegan SocietyVegan Lifestyle Association and Viva! are a real strength and asset to the grassroots scene too, and are all staunch supporters of these events - taking stalls, promoting freely, and providing skilled speakers and demo-ers and other stuff too... we are so lucky in the UK to have this.

The way I see it, groups like Viva! and Animal Aid can (and do) grab the headlines and make the news, like they do often - see link below - and the grassroots vegan education movement can so help people through the door as they wake up the way they live their lives full of exploitation. The two can - and do - work together...and on that score I will continue to support both regionals and nationals with all my heart and soul - and anything else that comes along

So let’s take heart and strength and open up the debate and sharpen our tools and learn to be more ethical, more consistent, more effective, less problematical and ultimately focus on helping people go vegan as quickly as we can.

Together we can do this right now in the UK - and set the example for the whole world. It’s within our grasp.

The world is vegan, if we want it.

Ps special shout out to man like Tony Wardle, He was up at the West Midlands Vegan Festival, presenting talks on going vegan, and helping with the Viva! stall. He has come in for some criticism recently, and some may say rightly so - but that doesn't change the deep respect and admiration and gratitude that I have for Tony and his work, We may not agree on everything - who does? - and some may disagree strongly with some of what Tony says and indeed what Viva! do. Tony is devoted to the cause of ending the exploitation of animals and has devoted the last twenty years of his live to doing so much to help attain this. I hope he continues to do so - his presence and support for grassroots vegan events especially is so very welcome and respected - as are his fantastic books and research that he has published in his lifetime. So Tony, just you want you to know that - and anyone else still reading - still have massive respect and admiration for you. And I want you to know that.

This huge piece in the Daily Mail about pig farms shows how effective groups like Viva! can beAmazing publicity in the...
