VegfestUK - 10 Contributions to the UK vegan movement in 2015 - 1) Helping Grassroots Vegan Events

Over the next few weeks we are looking at some of the contributions that VegfestUK makes to the UK vegan movement. We start with the help that we give the grassroots vegan events.

VegfestUK have been running shows for 13 years now, and we’re thrilled to see the growth of so many grassroots regional volunteer-led vegan events all across the UK. We do our best to support all of them through grants, promotion, advice, and resources.

In 2015, we gave grants to 15 different emerging vegan events in the UK, including:

  • the Northern Vegan Festival,
  • The Great Yorkshire Vegan Festival,
  • the Bournemouth Vegan Festival,
  • the West Midlands Vegan Festival,
  • the North East Vegan Festival (NEVFEST),
  • The Live a Better Life (LABL) Fair,
  • Winterfest,
  • Manchester Vegan Fair,
  • The Dublin Vegfest,
  • the Edinburgh Vegan Festival,
  • the Newcastle Vegan Festival

plus several others.

We also provided paid Facebook posts and free promotion for many of these events too.

Our PR firms also provided plenty of free PR for many of these events too, ensuring wide publicity in the local media.

Attendances have skyrocketed for many regional grassroots vegan events

We also cover them all on our free-to-use website www.vegfest.co.uk, which has seen an average of around 300 people a day using the website for updates on local vegan events.

We are massive fans of the growing UK vegan events scene and will endeavour to help as many as possible during the coming months. We provide free advice and support for many of the vegan events organisers and offer our experience and advice freely and for nothing in return except the knowledge of helping the grassroots vegans scene get stronger and more effective. It’s a privilege.

VegfestUK organiser Tim Barford commented, “It’s a grassroots movement at heart and it's grassroots volunteers that will be the game-changer. If we want the world to go vegan, it will happen a lot quicker if all vegans promote veganism and all vegans get out there and help educate others to go vegan. Grassroots volunteer-led activism is the key. If you want to be the most effective vegan activist, organise a grassroots vegan education outreach event. Events like the vegan festivals - even the small ones - are game-changers for so many people right now. Don't wait for someone else to do it - do it yourself. Every town deserves its own vegan event. Get on it.”

NEVFEST organiser Gareth Edwards from Farplace adds, ‘’VegfestUK was the inspiration for Farplace Animal Rescue bringing the first vegan festivals to the north east. We attended Bristol as a stallholder and were inspired to do our own events. Now at Nevfest4 and planning events at the Metro Arena in Newcastle, Edinburgh, Sunderland, London and the first ever vegan festival in Northern Ireland it is fair to say that the support and encouragement of VegfestUK organisers have been instrumental in helping us get to where we are today. Thank you.”

The Great Yorkshire Vegan Festival and Winterfest organiser Victoria Bryceson had this to say: “Vegfest events not only inspire, educate and motivate non-vegans across the UK but they also fully support other grassroots vegan events throughout the country as part of their dedication to spreading the vegan message as far and wide as possible, without such support a lot of which would not be running. Vegfest plays a huge part in the increase of veganism through their own Vegfests as well as through their continuing support for other grassroots vegan events.”

And Kevin White from the West Midlands Vegan Festival, now in its 9th year, added, “VegfestUK events play such an important role in the progress of veganism. Not only due to the many thousands of people who change their lifestyles as a direct result of attending, but through VegfestUK's support & advice to vegan event organisers across the country. VegfestUK lead the way to a vegan future, and many more grassroots events follow, not least our own!”

Festival organiser, Kevin White, posed for a photo with BBC WM 95.6FM presenters Sunny & Shay this afternoon, after...
