VegfestUK – one of the world's biggest vegan events and now in its 13th year – is renowned for its groundbreaking, dynamic and inspirational events, and our inaugural People's Vegan Activists Summit is already sparking intense interest with the announcement of leading keynote activists from the USA, including Professor Gary L. Francione, distinguished professor of law from Rutgers University and author of several influential books on animal rights ideology.
Gary Francione is an American legal scholar. He is known for his work on animal rights theory, and was the first academic to teach it in an American law school. He is a pioneer of the abolitionist theory of animal rights, arguing that animal welfare regulation is theoretically and practically unsound, serving only to prolong the status of animals as property by making the public feel comfortable about using them. He is the author or co-author of several books about animal rights, including The Animal Rights Debate: Abolition or Regulation? (2010, with Robert Garner), Animals as Persons (2008), Rain Without Thunder: The Ideology of the Animal Rights Movement (1996), and Animals, Property, and the Law (1995).
Prof. Francione comes in addition to the following well-respected speakers:
- renowned animal rights scholar Kim Stallwood, (author of Growl and other works)
- Dr. Melanie Joy, author of Why we Love Dogs, Eat Pigs and Wear Cows,
- Victoria Moran, author of Main Street Vegan,
- AR activist Ronnie Lee,
- the UK’s biggest vegan outreach organisations: Viva!, the Vegan Society, and Animal Aid,
plus other speakers to be confirmed, The Activists Summit is set to attract plenty of attention from vegan communities across the globe – there're currently plans for keynote speeches and debates, plus live streaming on parts of the summit worldwide.
This first-ever summit aims to help give activists the tools needed for successful and effective vegan outreach in their local communities. The summit includes keynote speeches from world-renowned speakers, debates, films and workshops to equip the vegan enthusiasts with ideas for convincing others to be vegan.
The Activists Summit takes place on Sunday October 11th and dovetails nicely with another huge People’s Vegan Health Summit taking place on the Saturday part of VegfestUK London. Other features include:

- Talks on Nutrition and Lifestyle,
