Vegan Information Project (VIP) – mould-breaking grassroots activism

Vegan Information Project (VIP) – mould-breaking grassroots activism

2016-01-17
| by Roger Yates

The Vegan Information Project (VIP) were extremely lucky to be included in the list of beneficiaries of the awesome Pig Freud tour organised by VegFestUK manager Tim Barford. We intend to use the welcome donation for grassroots vegan education events in Ireland. Thank you Pig Freud and VegFestUK.

A little background. When the Vegan Information Project was launched in 2013, we described it as “mould-breaking.” We always wanted something bigger than the usual grassroots vegan education table. As a rule, local groups have traditionally used a single fold-down table upon which they displayed leaflets and posters.

We decided to break free from that stifling conformity with a 3m x 3m gazebo stall which featured the following:

  • Yes, leaflets and posters, with a “zine library” added later;
  • vegan-friendly plant-based samples and portions;
  • video booths, sometimes used in the style of “pay-to-view”;
  • sales goods such as tee shirts, badges, and handmade jewellery, and
  • a “tea station” café area where people sit with a free cup of tea, and food portions and literature from the stall talking to a VIP volunteer about all things vegan.

The “tea station” has been a great success and we know several people who have “gone vegan” as a result of having all their questions about veganism and animal rights answered.

By 2015, we were using two gazebos in some locations (see pictures). This means a 6m x 3m vegan space which is very visible: the VIP have never bought into the nonsense that veganism is a scare word: our experience says this is a false claim. Our events include large banners reading, “Vegan Information Day”, “Vegan Information Project”, “Justice-For-All”, and “Why Vegan?” We had so much equipment at this stage that we wrecked a private car we used for transportation. Clearly a van was needed!

One of the two amazing vegan animal sanctuaries in Ireland, Back Into Daylight (and we defy anyone to come up with a better name for a sanctuary that rescues “farmed” animals), came to our rescue and sold us a van we named “Neville.”

A VIP volunteer also purchased a touring caravan which we had planned to use in the first-ever “Animal Rights Tour of Ireland”. We still intend to do this tour but the plans have been delayed following the caravan being broken into and smashed up (there is a lot of prejudice against caravans in Ireland – within two days of bringing it to Dublin, it had eggs thrown at it).

Since the latter part of 2015, the VIP have teamed up with another all-volunteer grassroots groups called Vegan Education on the Go (VEGO) and run joint 5-6 hour vegan education events every week in Dublin. Of course, a weather-proof gazebo stall is a must in Ireland!! VEGO is another grassroots group with a big vision of what vegan education outreach is all about.

So, thanks again to the thinking pig’s pig and VegFestUK for helping to keep VIP active and grassroots forever!!!
