ANIMAL EQUALITY iAnimal Virtual Reality Launch

ANIMAL EQUALITY iAnimal Virtual Reality Launch

2016-03-02
| by Anneka Svenska

The 1st of March saw the official UK Launch of Animal Equality’s iAnimal UK Campaign. Attended in central London by members of the Vegan community – animal charities, bloggers, film makers, ethical magazines and companies, the launch took off to a bang! iAnimal had already been shown as a taster at VegFestUK Brighton the weekend prior and now the media were subjected to its powerful message.

iAnimal is Animal Equality’s idea of bringing the reality of animal cruelty, in this instance – intensive farming – to the masses through the technology of virtual reality. The wearer dons a pair of snazzy Virtual Reality goggles attached to a phone which screens the film of an intensive pig farm back to the viewer and immerses them in a 360 degree world. They not only can listen and follow the action of the film, they can spin round and look all around themselves, so they can feel the entire room, not just what is in front.

The film, kindly narrated by animal advocate Peter Egan, tells the birth to death story of an intensive pig farm. It starts with the viewer watching the birth of piglets as if they are one of the piglets. As the piglets grow, the camera is set down low, so the viewer can experience the confinement and boredom that a pig must endure in one of these fattening pens. It is a horrendous experience indeed. As the pig grows, yet more confinement, violently biting and injuring its fellow pen mates through extreme boredom and lack of space. Finally we watch its tragic demise at a slaughterhouse, where the staff even laugh at the camera, as a pig accidentally falls from its tethering and smashes into the tub below used to collect the draining blood, which only adds to the horror of everything.

So why make this film? Toni Shepherd of Animal Equality spoke to me and explained that many meat eaters switch off when a film is played showing the truth of where their food comes from – by using the latest gadgetry, they hope to entice people to want to ‘have a go’ on the high-street and in universities and inevitably will be subjected to the content in question. The future is virtual reality and the youth of today adore computers and gadgets and so hopefully the campaign will go viral.

They hope to change many people from eating meat to a vegan diet by taking this all over the UK.

This is the start, they tell me, as this technology hopefully now can be used to immerse people in all areas of animal cruelty, such as all the other remaining parts of the animal food and dairy industry, the fur industry, circus animals and many others.

You can watch the 2D version on this website, but you can also find out where the proper Virtual Reality will be screening over this year.

Please remember to tweet out using the hashtag #iAnimal and spread the word that the only compassionate world is a Vegan one.

Also stay tuned for my short vlog covering the event where you can see me watching this extremely sad film and hear about Animal Equality’s motivation behind the campaign.
