Dr. Roger Yates - Setting up and Running a Gazebo Information Point

Dr. Roger Yates - Setting up and Running a Gazebo Information Point

| by Roger Yates | Posted in Vlog

One of the Activist Workshops I’m running at VegFestUK Bristol is all about setting up and running a “gazebo information point.” I will explain what we have done in Dublin over the last three and a half years, and draw on the outreach work of two groups, VEGO (Vegan Education on the Go) and VIP (Vegan Information Project).

Saturday May 21st, 3:00 – 3:30pm, in the Activists Workshops tent

Grassroots vegan public education is probably the most important animal rights work there is. There is simply nothing more important than increasing the numbers of ethical vegans in society. Until the numbers of vegans who adhere to the justice-for-all philosophy of veganism increases, we will never be able to effectively challenge cultural speciesism – and that is without doubt our number one target: what we are a fighting is a society-wide ideology based on rights violations, not simply a number of “cruel” individuals.

Vegan education outreach needs visibility, which is why the VIP wanted to break the mould of the conventional traditional of a couple of people stood behind a fold-down pasting table once or twice a month. Weekly – and better still – bi-weekly events are best. The gazebo stall measures 3m x 3m and, therefore is much more visible than a table. It is also weather proof (very handy in Ireland!) and means that we can include a number of features within, such as literature (leaflets, zines, posters, etc), vegan-friendly food samples, “sales goods” (t-shirts, badges, handmade jewellery, stickers, etc), and show video clips on a large screen, or in individual booths. See video below for a taster:

VEGO have broken the mould by having many activists lined up on the streets, talking to people about veganism, and displaying vegan posters. There are often 15 people at VEGO events, every week in Dublin, for 5 to 6 hours at a time. See video below:

VEGO’s review of their 2015 vegan campaigning work is here:

I will also explain the advantages of having a “tea station” – or small café area - as part of your vegan education outreach.

Come along to the workshop and let’s talk all things vegan education outreach! One final thing: never let anyone EVER tell you that vegan is a scare word.
