POLL: Should cats be fed a vegan diet?

POLL: Should cats be fed a vegan diet?

| by Editor | Posted in Polls

Should cats be fed a vegan diet?

On one hand, with the aid of a number of vegan options for cat food (including supplements) popping up in the market, there have been cases where cats have successfully transitioned to and thrived on vegan diets.

On another hand, there are also cases where cats, being “natural carnivores”, got ill on vegan diets and their owners had no choice but to re-introduce meat into their diets, after which their cats recovered their health.

In our quest to bring about a cruelty-free world as devoid of animal exploitation as possible, should we try our best to vegan-ise the “naturally carnivorous” cats in our households, or should we compromise and accept that some cats just don’t do well on vegan diets? Or treat this issue on a case-by-case basis?

To me, the wording seems to imply a bias. No one is denying that cats are obligate carnivores, so it wasn't necessary to put the phrase in the "no" option. "No, they are obligate carnivores and need meat in their diet" could have been replaced by, "No, they need meat in their diet" Alternatively, the "yes" option could have also included the phrase e.g. "Yes – despite being biologically obligate carnivores, there is no reason why cats can't thrive on a nutritionally complete vegan diet". Also, it would have been helpful to give some case studies of the cats who "got ill on vegan diets and their owners had no choice but to re-introduce meat into their diets, after which their cats recovered their health". My own cats are vegan, and I know many people (in real life and on FB) who have healthy vegan cats. I have yet to meet, or even hear of, a person who fed their cat a nutritionally complete vegan food which resulted in the cat's illness. Shouldn't we, as vegans, discourage speciesim?

Thanks for the poll. A poll can reveal attitudes, but a poll doesn't replace science. Plenty of cats do live healthy lives as vegans. There has been some research and there should be more studies (ethically run) to find the most conscientious ways to feed cats.
