Are you a vegetarian seeking to go vegan? VegfestUK London is there for you!

A recent report from The UK’s Vegan Society shows that in the UK today, not only are there over 500,000 people who describe themselves as vegans, but there’s another 500,000 people who describe themselves as ‘vegetarians looking to go vegan’.

And that means that over a million people in the UK right now are actively seeking vegan options nearly all the time.

People who are veggie have generally already shown some great human characteristics - by identifying a problem, thinking about it, deciding to take action, and then sticking with it - in this case giving up eating meat and fish. But many people go veggie because they care deeply about animals -  and whilst the horrors of the slaughterhouse are all too easy to imagine, the dark side of the dairy and the egg trade often remain hidden.

There’s plenty of compelling environmental, sustainable food production and health grounds already for veggies to consider going vegan - indeed, a number of scientific studies have shown that dairy products are carcinogenic and, in contrary to popular beliefs, conducive to osteoporosis - but it’s not just on these grounds that vegetarians are well advised to take the next step to go vegan.

The inescapable if somewhat unpalatable truth is that the production of dairy and eggs involves unspeakable and unnecessary cruelty to animals. Like all mammals, dairy cows have to give birth in order to lactate and produce milk. To meet the global population’s huge demand for dairy products, cows have to be artificially inseminated at speed, and when the calves are born, they are taken away from their mothers shortly afterwards in order for the cows’ milk to be saved for human consumption instead. When the mother cow eventually succumbs to fatigue and can no longer produce milk, she is sacrificed for hamburger meat.

Eggs, meanwhile, are high in cholesterol and involve a high degree of animal cruelty too. Approximately half the offsprings created in the egg laying process are male chicks, who are minced or gassed alive at birth as they are useless in egg production and whose flesh is not profitable.

The good news is that nowadays there are so many options to help vegetarians make the step to become vegans. Cheese, often quoted as the food that people find the hardest to give up on when going vegan, now has a large variety of vegan alternatives. Whether it’s mozzarella, blue cheese, brie, gouda, cheddar, or whatever, there’s a vegan substitute in the market! Coconut, almond, rice, hazelnut, soya and other plant-based milks are increasing occupying the place of cow’s milk on the shelves of both supermarkets and independent health stores. Guess what, even eggs, a traditional staple in baking, now have their own vegan replacement, which is music to the ears of many would-be vegans dreading a life without their favourite bakeries.

Veggies looking to go vegan will be welcome with open arms at VegfestUK London 2016, with a jaw-dropping amount of activities geared towards people seeking inspirations to make the vegan step. The 250 stalls on display are packed with free samples of vegan milks, cheeses, yogurts, ice cream, mayonnaise, eggs and other vegan alternatives for their animal-based counterparts. The 20 caterers present will be serving up a vegan feast for the hungry and the curious. There’re also a multitude of talks from a series of educational summits from doctors, GP’s, dietitians, leading vegan athletes, pro-intersectional activists on the virtues of the vegan philosophy, plus cookery demos showing how you can bring your vegan ingredients alive to impress your friends and families.
