INTERVIEW with Tomi Makanjuola a.k.a. Vegan Nigerian

INTERVIEW with Tomi Makanjuola a.k.a. Vegan Nigerian

| by Editor

In this series of interviews, we are speaking with all the speakers who will be presenting at VegfestUK London 2016, asking them about their current projects, goals, publications and favourite vegan food and other vegan activists.

Today we have Tomi Makanjuola, founder of the food website The Vegan Nigerian where she shares recipes inspired by traditional and modern Nigerian flavours and techniques. Tomi's passion for vibrant, flavourful plant-based food shines through in her distinct, mouth-watering recipes, some of which have been featured on BBC World News and several online publications.

What's your current main project?

I am currently running monthly pop-up restaurants in London. Guests can expect unique vegan Nigerian meals, a convivial atmosphere and an unforgettable experience each time. My hope is to expand the pop-up to several locations around London, and possibly abroad, bringing flavourful vegan meals to new audiences and showing them just how convenient and enjoyable vegan food can be. It has been a challenging but fun project, and one that I am incredibly passionate about. You can find out more about future events on my website:, and social media pages (@vegannigerian).

Have you had anything published recently (or recorded)?

I have a recipe booklet called 'Nice Cream: 25 Delicious Dairy-Free Recipes' available on Amazon. But I am also working towards my first full-length cookbook featuring many of the recipes on my blog, and more.

Anything you're particularly interested in or concerned with at the moment?

I am currently interested in veganism and intersectionality, particularly with regard to race and feminism. It is interesting to pin-point how these different movements intertwine, and the dialogues that spring from them never fail to fascinate me. To say the least, I am learning a lot.

Which other vegan activists are currently interesting you the most?

Aph Ko, founder of Black Vegans Rock. I also love what the Vegan Lifestyle Association is doing to bring about more awareness of how easy it is to be vegan here in the UK.

What’s your current favourite vegan food experience?

African vegan food. I am keen to explore the cuisines of other African countries apart from Nigeria, such as Ethiopia, South Africa, Morocco etc and the vegan dishes unique to these countries.

What's your current ambition / goal / dream to achieve?

It seems I am already on the path, but I want to bring the flavours of Nigeria to a wide audience while promoting the beauty and necessity of veganism. Be it through pop-ups, cookbooks, and the continuation of my blog and online platforms.
