Is Protein Deficiency a valid concern for vegans?

Is Protein Deficiency a valid concern for vegans?

| by Dave Sheahan | Posted in Vlog

In this Blogpost I want to discuss where vegans get their Protein and how much everyone actually requires to be healthy, fit and strong. This is always the biggest argument in the vegan vs meat eater debate as, supposedly, plant based sources of protein are totally inadequate and ineffective towards achieving optimal health as well as training performance and recovery.

There are many super plant based sources of protein on a plant based nutrition plan whether you are just looking to be healthy or looking to get lean or build muscle or become a better athlete. Meat eaters will always claim that plant protein is totally inadequate to meet the bodies needs especially when training intensively but the fact is that plant protein is far superior and beneficial for the human body than animal protein. Animal protein is very acidic and our goal should always be to consume as much alkaline based wholefood as possible each day.

Plant protein sources include all kinds of beans including black, butter aduki, cannelloni and many others. Other protein sources are lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, seitan. Then add in nuts and nut butters, seeds and avocados to the list. Does that sound like there are limited sources of protein for vegans? Also there is actually protein in most foods as there is carbohydrates so you get some protein from potatoes and bananas for example too. Only animal based protein sources like meat are pure protein sources but we need so much less protein than we are repeatedly told. There is a reason behind this message – profit!!

The whole focus on our  protein needs is founded on a load of lies manufactured by the food and supplement industries who create the impression through their marketing that we need so much protein for health and especially if we exercise. Their marketing gives the impression that we are in danger of being protein deficient and need so much protein when the truth is that it is nearly impossible to be protein deficient. Have you ever heard of anyone being protein deficient? We only need a fraction of the recommended protein requirements we are told we need and that even includes high level athletes. Protein is an important nutrient for our bodies but other nutrients like vitamins, minerals and chlorophyll are far more important for recovery and performance.

PRESS PLAY on the following video to hear me speak in more detail about what I have shared in the previous paragraphs as I share my opinion on the protein debate and share how I ensure I have enough protein in my nutrition as a plant based triathlete.

So as I hope you can now understand by what I have shared in the video above and previous paragraphs just how many lies you have been told by the food and supplement industries. We all need to ensure we get enough protein but there should be little fear of ever being deficient in this nutrient. Also I hope you can see now that the best sources are plant based and also there are a wide variety of choices.

Please feel free to place your comments and questions below in the comments section. Let us know your thoughts on what I have said. Let´s get some discussion going. This could be very helpful for other readers.
