Pro-Intersectional Vegan Conference - INTERVIEW with Sarah K. Woodcock of TAVS

Pro-Intersectional Vegan Conference - INTERVIEW with Sarah K. Woodcock of TAVS

2016-09-01
| by Editor | Posted in Vlog

In this series of blogs, we will be interviewing all our speakers at the upcoming Pro-Intersectional Vegan Conference at VegfestUK London (#PIVC2016), asking each of them a number of questions surrounding their work and other related topics.

Today we have Sarah K. Woodcock, founder and executive director of TAVS – The Advocacy of Veganism Society, which focuses on pro-intersectional vegan education and advocacy. She is an adopted Korean-American vegan who lives in the Minneapolis area of Minnesota in the United States, with her husband and adopted animals.

What's your current main project?

I run TAVS - The Advocacy of Veganism Society, an all-volunteer vegan education organization. We educate nonvegans about veganism with in-person advocacy, our WhyVeganism.com website, and high impact ad campaigns such as our national (US) vegan bus ad campaign. Visit WhyVeganism.com to learn about veganism and to request a free veganism starter kit. We also provide unequivocal and pro-intersectional vegan resources, such as our popular “Why veganism?” leaflets in several languages, to vegans around the world.

Visit TAVS.org for FREE vegan resources (leaflets, info sheets, stickers, bookmarks, etc.) for your vegan advocacy.

Have you had anything published recently (or recorded)?

Yes, I recently gave a talk at the South Florida Vegan Fest called Veganism and Social Justice: Taking a Pro-Intersectional Approach. It is on YouTube here:

Anything you're particularly interested in or concerned with at the moment?

Yes, basically pro-intersectionality in the animal rights movement and the implications of it for both animal rights and human rights.

Which other activists are currently interesting you the most?

I am really inspired by the TAVS activists around the world who take an unequivocally vegan and pro-intersectional approach such as (in alphabetical by last name) Evangelina Anderson in Canada, Rhonda Anderson of Canada, Michaela Aniara of Sweden, Julie Barone of North Carolina, Sonia Chauhan in California, and Casey Clague of Florida, Thomas Crotzer in Texas, Micha Gidde in Germany, John Neavear in West Virginia, Hayna Pittman of North Carolina, John Tallent of North Carolina, Sandy Warf in California, and Dr. Corey Lee Wrenn (founder of Vegan Feminist Network) in New Jersey.

And I am continually learning from and appreciative of several vegans including (in alphabetical order by last name) Pax Ahimsa Gethen, Dr. A. Breeze Harper, Aph Ko, Syl Ko, Christopher Sebastian McJetters, lauren Ornelas, Brenda Sanders, and many more.

What’s your current favourite vegan food experience?

All of it! But I looove vegan lasagna. Vegan. Lasagna.

What's your current ambition / goal / dream to achieve?

To get our national (US) vegan bus ad campaign fully funded. Vegans can help fund it here: www.abolitionistvegansociety.org/vegan-bus-ad-campaign

WhyVeganism.com Website: www.WhyVeganism.com

Many thanks to Sarah for giving up her time to answer our questions above. Make sure not to miss her talk via Skype at the Pro-Intersectional Vegan Conference on Sunday October 23rd at Olympia London (Conference Centre), with time slot TBA. At her talk, Sarah will discuss the foundation of justice - its implications and its limits for the animal rights movement, as well as how vegans can help take the movement to its next stage. With a special focus on pro-intersectionality, Sarah will discuss what will help and hinder the movement's progress.
