As the Vegan trend doubles again in the last 12 months it's hard to fathom what is holding caterers back from being more ingenious than just a humous / falafel / roasted veg sandwich. Perhaps they are scared of the unknown.
They seem to be leaving it all up to Prêt à Manger who have just announced their VeggiePret trial is now permanent and plans to open more Veggie Prets whose current top 5 best sellers all vegan options.
We figured we'd help the British Sandwich Industry out with a bit of market research. That's where you come in. Please vote for the sandwich you'd most like to see in UK high streets...
If you have some ideas of your own or find some outstanding examples of Great British Vegan Sandwiches please post pictures to our best vegan sandwich awards Facebook page:
Meanwhile please vote for the vegan sandwich that most appeals to you:
I’m happy with the ubiquitous Hummous/hummus/houmus and falafel/roasted veg – Who me? long may it reign!
2) Big Breakfast
An all day breakfast / vegan BLT is my human right! – smoked tempeh, tomato chutney, bubble and squeak, mushrooms and some fresh spinach – Out of bed and breakfast please!
3) Soysage sarnie
Everyone loves a soysage! With brown sauce, onions – think of all those people avoiding sausage because they are on the WHO cancer list – With so many vegan sausage variations to choose from - Veggie Sausages rule - Hot Dog On!
4) Prêt à Veggie
No Prêt have it spot on – we need to eat more veg, to hell with the protein! Artichoke, avocado, olives, sundried tomatoes, wild mushrooms, rocket, seaweed, beetroot, carrot – au natural, raw – what’s not to like? Veg Out!
5) Veggy Vegg
It’s not just because they are the cheapest option and the lowest common denominator, an egg sandwich is the UK favourite because it’s delicious. Give me a tofu and polenta omelette with cress and vegan mayo any day or avocado, tofu and tomato with vegan mayo. Avoid egg on your face!
6) Fingerlickin Good!
If it looks like chicken, tastes like chicken, and bites like chicken, what’s not to like as long as it’s vegan and thus avoids needless torture and killing of factory farming. No shortage of ideas what to do with chicken - let’s just do it vegan!
7) Have You Pulled?
Slow roasted Jackfruit is so like pulled pork there is just no excuses for an ethical, sustainable, healthier vegan alternative – with vegan trends doubling in just 12 months it’s unfathomable why no one is already on the case. Pull it out of the hat!
8) Say Cheeze!
Everyone loves cheese right? It’s clinically addictive (mild effects similar to cocaine says PCRM). Vegetarians complain they can’t live without it. Chefs can’t think beyond it. Times have changed – there’s now more vegan cheese out there than you can shake a stick at - Gimme a toasted vegan cheese sandwich or just slather it with Branston pickle - call me a plough man! Or a Vegan Calzone? (folded Pizza)
9) See Food and Eat It
The piper calls the Tuna right? There aren’t plenty more fish in the sea but there is a plethora of fishy-licious alternatives and a bit of seaweed, vegan mayo and Jackfruit or tofu can easily rise to the challenge of a Red Herring salad roll or Prawn Cocktail Wrap – Gimme gimme something fishy!
10) Pita Pâté
Nut Pâté or nut butter, wild mushroom Pâté, fresh herb Pâté, olive Pâté, vegetable Pâté, broad bean Pâté, lentil garlic and chilli Pâté, roasted pepper Pâté. You could almost have a different Pâté every day of the month and never get bored.
You can vote here in the widget below (or at the link here if widget does not work) – voting closes on Saturday October 15th 2016 at midnight:
The winning vegan sandwich that voters decide that they'd most like to see will be announced at the VegfestUK Awards Presentation Ceremony at Olympia London Conference Centre on Saturday 22nd October. We will then make every effort to encourage a high street outlet to sell the winning sandwich. Let us know if you'd like to help with that.
Thanks for your help!
