Vegan Athletes Summit interview with Robert Cheeke

Vegan Athletes Summit interview with Robert Cheeke

| by Editor

In this series of blogs, we will be interviewing all our speakers at the upcoming Vegan Athletes Summit at VegfestUK London 2016, asking each of them a number of questions surrounding their work and other related topics.

Today we have renowned vegan bodybuilder Robert Cheeke, two-time natural bodybuilding champion and best-selling author of the book, Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness - The Complete Guide to Building Your Body on a Plant-Based Diet, and his latest book, Shred It!. Robert is considered one of VegNews magazine's Most Influential Vegan Athletes. He tours around the world sharing his story of transformation from a skinny farm kid to champion vegan bodybuilder. Robert is also the founder and president of Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness. He writes books, gives lectures around the world, and maintains the popular website, He is a regular contributor to Vegan Health & Fitness Magazine, Naked Food Magazine and Forks Over Knives, a multi-sport athlete, entrepreneur, and has followed a plant-based diet for 20 years.

What's your current main project?

My current main project is finishing a new book I am co-authoring with my training partner, Vanessa Espinoza, titled Plant-Based Muscle. In addition to completing this book, which we hope to release by December, 2016, I write articles for every issue of Vegan Health & Fitness Magazine and manage

Have you had anything published recently (or recorded)?

I write for every issue of Vegan Health & Fitness Magazine which comes out every two months, and I have many of my favorite articles listed on my website. Here are links to a couple of them:

How To Create Your Own Vegan Athlete Meal Plans:

5 Quick Tips to Get and Stay Fit:

I also write articles for and here is a link to all 4 of my contributors to their website:

Anything you're particularly interested in or concerned with at the moment?

I am especially interested in the animal rights work done by groups including Mercy For Animals, Compassion Over Killing, and Vegan Outreach. They expose a lot of animal cruelty and bring it to mainstream awareness which can have an influence on the regular everyday consumer, leading consumers to making more compassionate choices. I am also inspired by the work that many health professionals do to bring the vegan lifestyle and plant-based diet into the conversation of households everywhere. Some of those leaders consist of the team at Forks Over Knives, Dr. Michael Greger from, and other vegan doctors and dietitians who write books, tour, host events, and evolve the conversation about the vegan lifestyle and how it relates to preventing and reversing diseases.

Which other vegan activists are currently interesting you the most?

I am always inspired by the work done by Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary, Dr. Garth Davis, author of Proteinaholic, Matt Frazier from No Meat Athlete, and I think Will Tuttle, author of The World Peace Diet, is one of the best voices for animals.

In the vegan athlete world, I am inspired and impressed by athletes who lead by a positive example, including: Vanessa Espinoza, Torre Washington, Giacomo Marchese, Dani Taylor, Brendan Brazier, and Scott Jurek, among others.

What’s your current favourite vegan food experience?

I don't know that I have a favorite vegan food experience because I have had so many. I have traveled all over the United States, Canada, and have toured in Australia, Asia, and many trips to the Caribbean and Mexico. Throughout my worldwide travels, I have found amazing vegan food everywhere. If I had to pick my favorite types of cuisine, I would say Indian, Thai, Ethiopian, and Mexican foods are my very favorites.

What's your current ambition / goal / dream to achieve?

I am always goal-oriented and driven, and I tend to focus on personal, business, and athlete goals, which all enhance my overall activism as well. The more books I sell, the more people I reach with my compassionate vegan athlete message. The more muscle I have, the more people I can likely have a positive influence on and inspire to give the vegan lifestyle a try. The more successful my business, the more travel I can afford to do to reach more people on tour and spread my message. More specifically, my current fitness goal is maintaining a 200-pound body as I get stronger in weight lifting, and set new personal best weight lifting records. My current business goal is to complete and release my new book, Plant-Based Muscle. And most importantly, my personal goal, is to get married after recently getting engaged to my girlfriend of 5 years. We should be getting married within the next year and we are in the process of buying a house and moving 850 miles away from our current residence. We will likely become home-owners just a few weeks before VegFestUK.
