Intersectionality, Captialism, and Veganism by xavier finix (audio podcast)

Intersectionality, Captialism, and Veganism by xavier finix (audio podcast)

| by Roger Yates

I need hardly add for all the animal advocates out there who are resistant to the idea of intersectionality, and don’t want to see capitalism as being part of our problem, or at least not the first item of our agenda – I mean, my challenge to that is that there isn’t a “first item” on our agenda, there cannot be. We must have an intersectional understanding of what we’re facing. We just can’t build the world that we want one thing at a time because [forms of oppression and privilege] enable each other. They are just part of a violent world.

In 2013, extending into 2014, the Dublin-based Vegan Information Project ran an educational “mini-course” which included talks, workshops, presentations, and film showings. Towards the end of the course, xavier finix gave a number of talks and facilitated workshops on direct action, intersectionality, and the mass media.

xavi and I also recorded 5 podcasts about the issues that arose from the course. In the run-up to the Vegfest pro-intersectionality conference in London (October 22nd and 23rd), I am pleased that xavi has given me permission to publish two of the podcasts when the focus was on intersectionality.

xavier finix is a gender queer radical feminist vegan anarchist who prefers the pronoun “they” to describe themselves. Apparently close friends can get away with “mister finix”! However, as you’ll hear in these podcasts, xavi used to be known as “tina cubberley,” and it was under this name that they took part in the recordings. It is therefore hurtful to them to hear this name now and the pronouns associated with it, so thank you xavi for putting up with the publication of what I think are awesome statements on intersectionality, a “must-listen” ahead of the London conference.

Among many other themes, you’ll hear xavi talk about veganism in terms of Herbert Marcuse’s concept of the “Great Refusal;” their view that capitalism is intrinsically harmful because it is a form of violence against human beings and other animals; that capitalism has redefined the notion of “freedom;” and that capitalism sells rape, rape culture, and kills persons identified as human females.
