Legendary Vegan marathon runner Fiona Oakes to collect VegfestUK Award at Vegfest Scotland

Legendary Vegan marathon runner Fiona Oakes to collect VegfestUK Award at Vegfest Scotland

| by Editor

Extreme marathon runner Fiona Oakes, who is also a passionate vegan and founder of Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary, has won this year’s VegfestUK Award in the Best Vegan Athletes category. The VegfestUK Awards celebrate the best of veganism across 16 categories, and Fiona will be collecting her well earned trophy at the upcoming Vegfest Scotland on Saturday December 3rd 2016 at the SECC (Hall 3).

Fiona hails from Chesterfield in Derbyshire and now lives in Essex where she runs Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary ( which provides a home for life to around 400 rescued animals, both domestic and ex-farm.

Vegan since the age of 6 years, Fiona is passionate about animals and works incredibly hard to care for all the rescues at her Sanctuary on her own with her partner Martin's help. However whilst the Sanctuary deals with the symptoms of abuse and exploitation, Fiona has created The Fiona Oakes Foundation ( to strike at the root cause of what she believes is the biggest single issue facing the world in which we live - sustainability.

Fiona has broken five marathon course records - and still holds four to this day - The North Pole Marathon, The Antarctic Ice Marathon, the Ruska Marathon, The Dartmoor Vale Marathon and the Essex Championship Marathon at Halstead. She has completed over 50 marathons and a personal best of 2 hours 38 minutes.

In 2013 she became the fastest women in the history of the World to run a marathon on all 7 continents in terms of the total number of hours taken. She is also the fastest woman to run a marathon on all 7 Continents plus the North Pole - both in terms of the aggregate time and the elapsed days - an incredible achievement but made quite extraordinary given her disability.

The Vegfest Scotland organisers added, “It’s brilliant news that the indefatiguable Fiona Oakes with all her passion for animals and veganism has won this year’s VegfestUK Award. Fiona has shown time and again through her odds-defying achievements that no one needs animal products for health, and her infectious positivity for all life has been really inspiring not only to pre-vegans but also current vegans who aspire to be activists and inspire changes in others too. Well done Fiona and we look forward to seeing you in person at Glasgow!”

Fiona will be appearing on both days December 3rd 4th 2016 at Vegfest Scotland. She will be collecting the VegfestUK Award on the Saturday December 3rd between 12:45pm – 1:00pm in the Deep Veganism Talks room, where she is scheduled to speak at 1:00pm.

Fiona will also be doing 3 talks at the event:

Sat 1pm Deep Veganism Talks Room - From child to champion

Sat 4pm Deep Veganism Talks Room - A life for the animals

Sun 12pm Light Veganism Talks Room - An extra mile for the animals

Last but not least, The Fiona Oakes Foundation is offering a Scholarship for 2 places at the exciting Teen VGN Summer Camp 2017, which runs between August 21st – 26th 2017 at Margam Discovery Centre in Port Talbot, Wales. These spots are specifically for individuals who would not usually be able to afford to come to camp, those from families on low-income and underprivileged backgrounds. The organisers Teen VGN believe that EVERYONE should be given a chance to attend their #vegan camp and many thanks to The Fiona Oakes Foundation enough for helping make that dream a reality.
