Final statement on Gary Francione and VegfestUK

Final statement on Gary Francione and VegfestUK

| by Editor

As some of you may have heard, Prof. Gary won’t be attending future events at VegfestUK. Many of you will be heartily sick of this ‘discussion’. We are too. So this is our final statement regarding these matters.

The reason he isn’t coming is simple. On his Facebook page, Professor Gary and his moderators make continued unpleasant, unnecessary, damaging and derogatory attacks on respected vegan activists across the globe.
They inflict undeserved psychological damage on people time and again.

In the previous week, no less than 8 decent vegan activists were viciously attacked by a group of people who thrive on trying to ruin other people’s lives – all in public.
We at VegfestUK cannot be a part of this any longer.

Professor Gary will no doubt shortly be releasing a statement about his dismissal. If true to form, he will seek to relentlessly blame others for his own downfall. He will seek to make out, with his lawyer’s approach, that we have ‘sold out’ or ‘bowed to pressure’ or ‘become welfarists’ or have ‘put financial interests first’ or ‘popularity’... or some other excuses.

He will seek to make out that somehow we are “pathetic” and “dishonest”. He will take quotes out of context and attempt to ‘prove’ that we are somehow to blame, and will use the content of so called ‘private’ emails to try and achieve this. No surprise – we’ve seen it all before.
But he won’t sit and face himself, and his own mistakes.

Professor Gary has written some great books. We love his ideology and find it very useful. And indeed we will continue to host talks and debates about his ideas and theories.
But we won’t be inviting him back to VegfestUK whilst he continues, along with his moderators, to decimate good people online, day in day out, 24-7, without any consideration of the psychological damage inflicted on their targets and any constructive solutions whatsoever.
That’s not part of our idea of a social justice movement, and certainly not a peace movement, it is anything but.
So if you see some lies, and mistruths, and accusations from him and his moderators over the next few days, we would invite you to ignore them. They are the utterly embarrassing ramblings of an individual who, despite his advancing years, has staggeringly yet to find the humility and grace to deal with his own oppressive, obnoxious nature which is, in our humble opinion, highly detrimental to a vegan movement.

We won’t be responding to his statement at all. Or any comments on Facebook. Not now. We no longer wish to debate with Professor Gary.
