Intersectional Vegan Summit continues at VegfestUK Brighton 2017 after debut at Olympia

If you’re looking to learn more about intersecting issues of justice from a vegan perspective, and how different systems of oppression such as speciesism, racism, sexism etc influence and intersect with each other, look no further than the Intersectional Vegan Summit taking place on the Saturday March 11th 2017 at the Brighton Centre, as part of the huge VegfestUK Brighton 2017.

This summit is a sequel of the inaugural Pro-Intersectional Vegan Conference which happened at Olympia London last October. Hosting this summit is vegan and justice advocate Christopher Sebastian McJetters from Vegan Publishers and VINE Sanctuary. Sebsatian has given a number of powerful and inspiring talks at VegfestUK events as well as other major vegan conferences in 2016 and he’s delighted to be back this year hosting the first Intersectional Summit of the year at VegfestUK.

Amongst the topics to be discussed at the summit is the current surge and acceptance of alt-right vegan groups, the history of veganism in the non-Western world, how these cultures are treated in the movement today, how whiteness became the norm in the vegan community and why this is harmful. Eshe Kiama Zuri, political activist, social campaigner and the owner of Yemoja Foods – a fully vegan British-Caribbean catering business – dissects what intersectionality means and how it's important in our current unstable political climate to build safe spaces for (especially marginalised) vegans and veganism to move forward.

In the eyes of some, capitalism is part of a hierarchy of oppression and in the words of Arab-Australian media commentator Ruby Hamad, who will be speaking by Skype at the event, “If we think we can remove animals from the hierarchy of oppression without dismantling the hierarchy altogether, we are embarking on a fool's errand.” Come to her Skype talk to find out more about the topic.

Along the same thread, popular vegan Youtuber Marine Janine (a.k.a. A Privileged Vegan), whose channel is dedicated to educating herself and teaching others about pro-intersectional veganism, thinks that we are exiting an era of consumerist neoliberal veganism, and now facing the threat of a new world order: neo-fascism and White nationalism. In her own words, “Veganism has a dangerous history of being tied to extreme right-wing movements. However, this new era also presents an opportunity to radically rethink animal liberation, and politicize our movement to reject all structures of patriarchal and colonial domination.” Come to her talk and find out more about confronting capitalism and the new politics of animal liberation.

As neoliberal policy slowly crashes and right-wing nationalism and neo-fascism rise in its wake, what can we learn from animals about how to more forward? The talk by vegan writer, theatre artist and educator Laura Schleifer explores what animal societies have to teach us about direct democracy, dismantling hierarchy, mutual aid, peaceful conflict resolution, and creating a flourishing ecology between us and the natural world.

A central tenet of veganism is non-violence. But what is actually violence? What is NOT violence? Does it include property destruction? Is self-defence an act of violence? Is it ever okay? Can we feel a little schadenfreude watching animals exact revenge in hunting videos? What are useful ways to channel our anger? How do we organise in this current political climate? Ecofeminist writer, scholar, and activist pattrice jones will elaborate on these topics at her talk to be conducted by Skype.

In addition to the talks outlined above, there will also be an open discussion “Radical Veganism - Approaching An Animal Revolution” led by Christopher-Sebastian McJetters and panelled by Marine Janine, Eshe Zuri, and Laura Schleifer on the issues facing animal liberation throughout Western society today.

Other activities at the event

Don’t miss the 230 stalls at the event where there’ll be plenty of useful information on veganism, as well as free samples for you to try out the textures of vegan “meats”, “cheeses”, “milks” and other vegan produce.

Looking for more info and support on going and staying vegan? There are also dozens of talks on Easy Veganism, Light Veganism and Deep Veganism, a Vegan Film Festival, a Vloggers Corner, a Teen Zone and a Mature Zone.

And last but not least, to round off an amazing weekend, there are dozens of Performances from 2 Stages, a Vegan Comedy Festival on Sunday, Kids Cookery Classes, Magic Shows and Face Painting for the little ones too.
