Carnival atmosphere with live acts and DJ's across 2 stages at 15th annual VegfestUK Bristol

2017-04-10
| by Editor | Posted in Vlog

Bristol is renowned for its abundance of quality music festivals and this year’s vegan food festival VegfesttarantismUK is no exception, playing host to an eclectic mix of live acts and DJ’s performing across 2 stages at the historic Amphitheatre on Bristol Harbourside on the weekend May 20th 21st 2017. Expect a family carnival atmosphere with the addition of some really good food options in the centre of Bristol over the whole weekend.

Saturday – “Show Me Love” Party

Main Stage (6:00 – 11:00pm)

Robin S – Danny Rampling – Rozalla – Nicky Holloway – Chris Cross – Bristol Rock Choir

Robin S is an American singer and songwriter who scored success in the 1990s with such hit singles as "Show Me Love" (which was her debut single and a number-one hit) and "Luv 4 Luv". She has had three number ones on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.

Danny Rampling is a bonafide music visionary and a revolutionary dance music pioneer. Through his legendary ground breaking Acid House club Shoom and subsequent long-standing associations with Kiss FM and Radio 1, Rampling ́s catalyst influence has helped to shape dance music for over 20 years.

Rozalla is best known for her three 1991/92 hit singles "Faith (In the Power of Love)", "Are You Ready To Fly" and particularly "Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)", which has been remixed and re-issued several times. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked her as the 98th most successful dance artist of all-time.

Nicky Holloway began playing records in the disco pub scene around the Old Kent Road in 1980. He first started to organise club nights, such as Special Branch in London Bridge in 1984 alongside Pete Tong and Gilles Peterson. Holloway (with Paul Oakenfold, Johnny Walker and Danny Rampling) was one of the "Ibiza four" - four DJs who travelled to the island for a holiday in the summer of 1987. They visited a club called Amnesia and an Argentine DJ called Alfredo Fiorito, which inspired them to promote Balearic beats back in the UK.

House head extraordinaire Chris Cross returns to the Vegfest main stage, the past occasions on which he graced us with his presence were to warm up admirably for The Happy Mondays in 2013, as well as house music legends the man Like Adamski, the exceptionally talented Alison Limerick and the grand daddy himself Marshall Jefferson in 2016…

Rock Choir has been taking the country by storm since 2005. Now with over 24,000 members across the UK, the choir are used to entertaining crowds with upbeat, pop music sung by over 100 voices! Expect to sing and dance along with singers from Bristol and the surrounding area.

Saturday Daytime (12:00 – 6:00pm)

Main Stage

Eckoes – Edd Keene – Chuck Harriet – Atlantic – Sheena Bratt – Jack Humphries

Eckoes is an enchanting new artist with such a unique voice floating over her own blend of electronic RnB. Championed by 6 Music & BBC Introducing with nods from the MOBO Awards, AFROPUNK & included in Q Magazine's ‘Best of', she is one to watch. Having opened stages for the likes of The Streets & Sister Sledge, her debut singles Valentine & Blue Deep are out on Spotify, iTunes & Google Play now.

Edd Keene aka The Green Man, has been touring the festival circuit in the UK and Europe since 2007, captivating audiences with his unique Live Looping act. He is skilled in Saxophone and Flute as well as Guitar, Bass, Percussion and Vocals, incorporating them all into his act. He records and layers them up completely live with no pre-recordings, to create his tracks which range from Reggae to Jazz, Folk and Middle Eastern styles.

Chuck Harriet were formed from a desire to play music that has become cool again. Vintage Jazz Swing played with style and flair to leave you Feeling Good or wanting to Sing Sing Sing. All band members are highly experienced musicians playing together with ease and skill. Classic tunes mixed with modern songs and a creative flair, give Chuck Harriet a classy and unique style and sound.

ATLANTIC are a four-piece pop/rock band hailing from Bristol in the South West of England. Blending a variety of pop, rock and soul influences, they bring a fresh and exhilarating new sound to the UK music scene.

Sheena Bratt's band Venus Rising, named in support of The Venus Project's solutions for peace, sustainability and abundance for all, have had BBC 6 Music airplay, and been publicly lauded by Tom Robinson, Kim Wilde and Mark Radcliffe. The band played at VegfestUK Bristol 2015 to a huge crowd, and we're delighted to have Sheena Bratt's upbeat, optimistic, summery music back at VegfestUK Bristol 2017.

25-year-old singer-songwriter Jack Humphries prides himself as an original folk/country/blues artist from the South West. A loop pedal user with stomping floor percussion, Jack does covers from 50's to now alongside some heartfelt catchy originals.

Live Acts Stage (12:00 – 9:00pm)

The Kings of Outer Space – Furlined – Mobius Loop – My Style – Andy Twyman – Grey Hairea – Chloe Ray – Astrophe

Cosmic rockability band The Kings of Outer Space has a reputation for being a great live act with their modern take on B-movie rockabilly.

Wry lyrics, rich vocals and lush, swooning cello are the defining features of Furlined, a Bristol band formed around the songwriting talents of vocalist/guitarist Neil Crossley. Described as ‘Morrissey meets Americana’, Furlined blend alt-country influences and British chamber pop sensibilities, with life-affirming themes set against suburban longings and everyday regrets.

Mobius Loop create gloriously eccentric gypsy folk stories, fusing world music and conscious rap with eruptions of free-form dance charged with an intimately powerful and intense energetic live performance.

My Style plays with the aim to live a life creating, making music, seeing the world and putting their own stamp on the music scene. Built from the ground up by Mac McCormick (23) Bristol, UK and Talia Smulian (22) Tel Aviv, Israel. Writing, recording, producing, mixing and performing all the original material themselves, My Style have their own sound, growing from Dub, Hip Hop / UK Hip Hop, Trip Hop and the ways of the world.

When Andy Twyman released the first ever naked Christmas music video it hit the national headlines, leading The Mirror newspaper to ask "Is this the best Christmas music video ever?" With the topics of his songs ranging from chickens to Luxembourg via Pot Noodle, 24-year-old Andy Twyman blends blues with humour and rock and roll to titillate your ears, mind and toes. Having performed on BBC Three and Channel 4, Andy's reputation is growing as a highly original and entertaining act.

Tim Wellard (guitar), John Bickersteth (keyboards) and Bob Marley (bass) of Grey Hairea play a country, folk and blues based set featuring some of Tim’s songs, a few standards and some traditional material. Previously known as “The Lost Drifters”, they played around the West Country until in 2006 they became part of “The Clive Palmer Band” and for the next five years toured the country (playing at this festival a few years ago). Clive sadly passed away in 2014 and Tim, John and Bob reformed as “Grey Hairea”.

London-based Chloe Ray who grew up in Wallington, South London has just returned from New York City where her latest release "The Waiting Room" was mastered by Grammy nominated Emily Lazar at The Lodge. Growing up influenced by artists such as Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Buckley, Alanis Morissette, Ani Difranco, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan she found a 12-string guitar and her own unique emotive and spellbinding sound.

Alexandra Pawlitka (a.k.a. Astrophe) is a singer-songwriter that takes inspiration from prominent female voices in the rock music scene and is currently based in Perth. In 2015 she graduated from the University of Highlands and Islands with an Honours Degree in Popular Music. Aside from taking part in various musical projects, Alexandra has been performing her own solo material for several years and in 2014 she formed the alternative rock band Astrophe who are currently working towards their EP due to be released in 2017.

Sunday

Main Stage (5:00 – 9:00pm)

Dub Pistols – The Scribes – ZionRuts

Over an 18-year career, the Dub Pistols have worked with heroes like The Specials, Busta Rhymes, HoraceAndy, Madness and Gregory Isaacs. They’ve burned through different members and hundreds of thousands of pounds on assorted capers and hedonism. It should have been a recipe for oblivion, but the band that started out in the mid-90s with Barry DJ’ing while musicians jammed over the top has metamorphosed into a mighty reggaematic bass-driven live machine, a super-tight festival regular that keeps winning over new fans at Glastonbury, Bestival, Beat-Herder and across Europe.

The Scribes are an alternative hip hop three piece based in the UK consisting of lyricist/multi-instrumentalist Ill Literate, rapper Jonny Steele and beatbox maestro Lacey, whose unique talents have combined to make a much heralded sound quite unlike any other on the scene today and deliver breathtaking performances full of energy and off the cuff freestyling guaranteed to move any crowd.

ZionRuts Family is a Roots Reggae Band that was formerly founded by two of its lead singers – RUTSMAN SPICE and ZIONDAWTA in 2014 when Rutsman was coming from his African Tour. Ziondawta was doing her jazz projects but after the two met they formed ZionRuts family giving life to reggae music where most of the people didn’t understand and appreciate that kind of music.

Sunday Daytime (12:00 – 5:00pm)

Main Stage

The After Hours – Anairda & The Anarkistas  – Thunderbridge Bluegrass Band – The Mourning Suns – Jo Larcombe

The After Hours are a 6 piece folky, country, jazzy type band hailing from Bristol. Male and female harmonies are shared by both singer/songwriters and the band are backed by some incredible musicians. Cecile's soft French accent and Pauls style of singing ignite your heart and soul as sounds of violin and mandolin bring the songs to life. Expect delightful piano arrangements and a strong and trusted rhythm section. Catchy melodies and an array of interesting lyrics make this bands style truly unique, and live this charismatic band really are a fun and joyful experience.

Anairda & The Anarkistas is a world folk-rock/fusion band with international roots who believe in the power of music to inspire change.

Thunderbridge Bluegrass Band have been around since 2005 with the present line up for about three years. Still with the original front man skills and singing of Nick Girone- Maddocks and the punchy double bass of Jules Bushell. More recently with the addition of virtuoso banjo playing of John Breese and driving fiddle of Matt Gryspeerdt.

Out and about bringing their own version of bluegrass, using one microphone, four instruments and four soaring voices which blend together to make a highly traditional sound with a contemporary twist and lots of humour.

Six piece Birmingham rock band The Mourning Suns are led by the unique voice of frontwoman Rosemary Wilkes and wily folk inspired finger-picking style of guitarist Anthony Williams. Along with the close female and male harmonies of Wilkes and Williams, the band’s stunning sound continues to impress; the gorgeous interweaving viola of Lizze Chan-Foxley; crunching guitar noise and virtuosic blues solos from Allan Young; and fierce heartbeat from bassist Ash Withey and drummer Ric Yarborough.

Jo Larcombe has been writing and performing for a number of years with a love for folk, country and roots music. She writes for the sheer pleasure of it and also performs acoustic covers with a few twists. She is currently working with Rob Turner to write and produce a new collection of songs for their forthcoming EP, ‘The Story Line', as well as recording vocals for bass player and producer Flavio Baldo.

Sunday

Live Acts Stage (12:00 – 8:00pm)

Bert’s Animal Band – The Skimmity Hitchers – Mitchell & Vincent – Fly Yeti Fly – Isabella Alford – Snazzback – Beccy Farr – F.T.T.P.

Bert’s Animal Band is possibly the strangest of all bands. High energy and raucous one minute and then, at the moment you’re sure it’s all really just a shambles, they shift instantly to expose their carefully crafted compositions and poignancy. This will be the first summer touring their new 'Vegan Album' which you can hear at www.bertmiller.uk

The Skimmity Hitchers blend razor sharp parodies and original material with a raucous stage show, spontaneous audience interaction, cheeky banter and general cider shenanigans... in their quest to bring proper job drinkin' music to the masses the band have stolen the show at events of all types and sizes.

Playing lively traditional music from the British Isles on Fiddle and Nylon strung Guitar, Mitchell and Vincent mix full on instrumentals alongside their own arrangements of traditional songs.

Based in Dorset and Somerset, they perform all over the South West and beyond and have been described as playing: ‘Distinctive yet fresh traditional folk', musicians who ‘tell stories with their melodies' and simply ‘Flippin' brilliant!'. They were picked out as the Lyme Folk Weekend 2014 highlight of the festival after bringing the ‘crowd to tears one moment and to their feet the next'.

Fly Yeti Fly are acoustic duo Lorna Somerville and Darren Fisher. Blending sensitive vocal harmonies with intricate guitar arrangements, mandolin and harmonica, they have a natural and free-spirited sound, and a warm engaging personality to their music, telling tales of love, loss and living off the land. With a musical style that has been described as ‘dream-folk', their melodic songs echo influences from 1960s folk musicians, modern Americana and their home in the South-West of England.

14-year-old Isabella Alford is an exciting young acoustic singer-songwriter/guitarist who started performing her own compositions at open mics at aged 9 and got a taste for it! Isabella's passion is writing her own songs which have an Indie/folk style and are very catchy! Isabella has been described as "unassuming" and having "An incredible talent" She also applies her own individual take on a wide range of covers which can be anything from Mumford and sons with energetic guitar playing to Catfish and the Bottlemen and Tom Odell. With original material, beautiful vocals and great guitar skills, Isabella is an exceptional young artist to watch perform.

After playing together for the first time on Corn Street (Bristol) in September, Snazzback have been busking the cold stretch, bringing the streets an echo of something else. Their songs play with undulating jazz/ improvisation, shimmering Afro-Cuban rhythms and deep soul/funk grooves. Having hosted several impromptu street parties last summer in Bristol, the 5-piece street-jazzers are now jumping between street and stage, bringing their cold new grooves off piste!

Born in South Wales, Beccy Farr spent her childhood playing piano and aspiring to be a songwriter. In 2008, she moved to Bristol and was drawn into the music scene around her, giving her the push she needed to perform her own songs. Her debut album ‘Impact of a Whisper' was released in 2013 and her follow up EP ‘Burdens' was written in 2015 but not released until early 2017. Her songs are melodic and her lyrics are honest.

F.F.T.P. comprises of two musicians Chezney Newman and Maxine Venton who first met in 2005 whilst living and working on separate musical projects in southern Spain. The folk music that they play is derived from 12 years of working, travelling and playing within Europe. Occasionally working together in the same bands but also working on a wide and varied amount of diverse musical projects.in 2016 they finally came together to form F.F.T.P.
