VegfestUK Awards 2017 updates - up to September 18th 2017

VegfestUK Awards 2017 updates - up to September 18th 2017

| by Editor | Posted in Awards

Since voting for the #VegfestUKAwards2017 went live on September 1st 2017, there have been over 1,000 votes cast in each of the 17 categories involved. With less than 2 weeks remaining until voting draws to a close at midnight on Sunday October 1st 2017, let’s have a quick look at developments in each category...

Best Vegan Snacks

It’s good to see a number of up-and-coming snack companies such as Jeavons Toffee and Ananada’s Marshmallows challenging established firms such as Nakd and Pulsin in the quest for the top gong, alongside the likes of Perk!er Quinoa Bars and Meridian Snack Bars, so expect further interesting developments before voting closes.

Best Vegan Fast Food

This new category, which was introduced thanks to the rise of a number of quality vegan fast food varieties in the market, sees a tight contest between the likes of One Planet Pizza, Loving Hut Express and Cool Jerk Vegan Pie along with Mr Nice Pie, Badgers Dairy Free, Matter Fastfoods To-fish and Beelzebab.

Best Vegan "Meat"

Vegan “meats” are an important component in many people’s journeys into 100% veganism and thanks to the rise of many vegan “meat” brands, eating vegan is getting easier and easier. Vegan “meat” brands such as Fry’s, Tofurky and VBites Foods are neck in neck with Vegusto not far behind.

Best Vegan "Cheese"

Likewise, dairy-free varieties of “cheese” have smoothed out many people’s transition to veganism, with many citing cheese as the hardest animal-based ingredient to give up on. Independents Mel’s Kindness Kitchen and Tyne Chease are vying for the top gong along with last year’s winner Violife and Bute Island Foods. Don’t forget that there’s still a chance for Nutcrafter Creamery, Follow Your Heart and Raw Food Rosie’s to gain a big leap over the remaining days of voting.

Best Vegan Cakes

Vegans love vegan cakes almost by default and how can we have the VegfestUK Awards without a vegan cakes category? Looking at the current proceedings, the standouts at the moment are last year’s winner The Vegan Cakery, Ms. Cupcake, as well as Hannah Banana Bakery, Missy’s Vegan Cupcakes, Rubys of London and Vegan Sweet Tooth London.

Best Vegan Chocolate

And likewise, vegans love showing off vegan chocolate to pre-vegans, and we’re blessed to have so many quality brands of vegan chocolate available on the market. VEGO Chocolate and Moo Free Chocolates are joined by The Raw Chocolate Company, Adam’s Raw Chocolate and The Raw Chocolate Pie Company at the top.

Best Chilled / Frozen Vegan Desserts

Booja Booja, Go with the Fro, Yorica! and Pudology are currently going strong in the gathering of votes for the much-coveted trophy.

Best Vegan Drinks

Consisting of a large variety of drinks that are 100% vegan, this category sees Oatly, Fentiman’s, Rebel Kitchen and Koko Dairy Free joined by rising stars Besos de Oro near the summit.

Best Vegan Caterer

The fine selection of 100% vegan caterers nominated here sees a tight battle at the top between Mex It Up, Pomodoro e BasilicoHappy Maki, LazyBoy Kitchen, Veggies Catering Campaign, Shambhu’s Vegan Caterers and Greek Vegan Deli – all in with a good chance of winning.

Best Vegan Restaurant

One of the tightest categories in this year’s awards sees Temple of Hackney wrestling with Purezza, 222 Vegan Cuisine, V Revolution and El Piano for the top spot, whilst others such as The 78, Henderson’s and Manna are also enjoying their appearances in the proceedings with decent momentum built just before this release.

Best Vegan Clothing

This category consists of companies producing various ranges of super-cool vegan T-shirts, which are great for celebrating our vegan way of life. Competition is fierce with the presence of many’s firm favourites Viva La Vegan, ETHCS, Wear Your Voice and AntiCarnist promising an interesting run-in.

Best Vegan Footwear

Footwear made without animal skin and other animal-based ingredients is rising to the fore in the market. Old favourites Vegetarian Shoes continues to impress alongside Wills Vegan Shoes and Beyond Skin. Also worth looking out for are Ethical Wares, Eco Vegan Shoes, Freet Footwear and You’re So Vegan, as each of them is well capable of a late run to the top.

Best Vegan Homeware and Lifestyle Products

Vegan lifestyle extends to a wide range of homeware and lifestyle products these days, with the likes of candles, cleaning products, deodorants, perfumes and others demonstrating the wonders of a vegan lifestyle in flying colours. Expect plenty of twists and turns still in the run-up to voting deadline as Astonish, EDEN Perfumes, humblestuff, Humane Wildlife Solutions and Harper’s Candles are all vying for top spot.

Best Vegan Bodycare

This category sees a string of strong candidates in the vegan bodycare sector with TheVeganKind, Beauty Without Cruelty, Buddha Beauty and Fit Pit Deodorant pulling away slightly at the top but never say never for the rest.

Best Vegan Vlogger

Youtube has become a fertile ground in the spread of vegan news and a number of vegan vloggers / Youtubers have excelled considerably with their excellent content. Earthling Ed, Plant-Based News and other quality candidates like Hench Herbivore and Vegan Geezer ensure that we’re in for a predictably unpredictable outcome.

Best Vegan Magazine

The increasing varieties of magazines dedicated to veganism see the introduction of this new category this year, which currently sees Vegan Life MagazineThe Hectic Vegan, Vegan Food and Living Magazine and VivaLife Magazine making their presence felt at the top.

Best Vegan Online Resource

The internet is heaving with excellent resources for potential vegans to browse through for where to eat out vegan, or suggested meal plans, social groups, travel ideas, fitness regimes, dating websites and so on. And for this reason, we have this year the Best Vegan Online Resource category, votes for which is currently snapped up by HappyCow, Fat Gay Vegan and Veganuary amongst other quality nominees such as Barnivore and Teen VGN.
