5 Reasons to Try Vegan Nigerian Food

5 Reasons to Try Vegan Nigerian Food

| by The Vegan Nigerian

In this guest blog, The Vegan Nigerian food blogger and recipe developer Tomi Makanjuola talks about the main reasons why we should give vegan Nigerian food a try, as well as some Nigerian vegan recipe ideas.

Tomi will be performing live cookery demos of some of her favourite Nigerian vegan recipes at both VegfestUK Brighton and Bristol in 2018. Advance tickets for both events will go on sale in January on the show websites.

As my blog The Vegan Nigerian reaches its five-year anniversary, I continue to be amazed by the encouraging responses I get from people who are encountering vegan Nigerian food for the first, or indeed rediscovering Nigerian food from a new lens. Here are some of the top reasons to get on the vegan Nigerian food train.

1. Variety!

One of the best things about being vegan is that it pushes you to experiment more often with all kinds of plant foods. Nigerian cuisine is rich with exciting ingredients that you may not cook with on a day-to-day basis if you are not from Nigeria or West Africa. Staples like yam, plantain, yellow-flesh sweet potato, cassava, egusi seeds and brown beans are just some of the wonderful things you can add to breathe some life into your vegan menu!

2. Flavour!

I’m going to go all out and say that the flavours in Nigerian cooking are on another level! You will be hard-pressed to find a dish that doesn’t capture your imagination or excite your tastebuds. Whether it is the heat of ata rodo (scotch bonnet pepper) or the pungent taste and aroma of scent leaves.

3. Experience!

Without a doubt, food offers insight into culture and tradition. Dip your toes into Nigerian culture by trying vegan versions of age-old classic recipes like fufu, pounded yam, eba and egusi soup. Attend a vegan Nigerian pop-up event for a unique dining experience and to learn the history behind some of these foods!

4. Health!

One of the first things you’ll notice about vegan Nigerian food is that it is largely centre around whole, unrefined, natural ingredients which provide all the nutrients you need to enjoy a healthy, balanced vegan diet. Leafy greens, high-fibre root vegetables and protein-rich grains are some of the ingredients you’ll effortlessly eat a lot of.

5. Budget-friendly and Accessible!

Finally, a vegan Nigerian menu is unlikely to break the bank. Many of the ingredients can be bought in bulk at very low prices. Pay a visit to your local African food shop and see for yourself. Four plantains for a pound? Now that’s what I call a bargain!
