VegfestUK Bristol 2018 - new venue, new direction, new prices

2017-12-11
| by Editor | Posted in VegfestUK Bristol 2018

VegfestUK Bristol 2018 takes place on May 26th 27th 2018 at our new venue of Ashton Gate Stadium, home of Bristol City football and rugby clubs. The event is now in its 16th consecutive year and is set to attract a crowd of between 10,000 – 12,000 visitors and around 250 exhibitors including caterers and bars. This blog clarifies a few points on our direction and also our pricing.

Direction

Talks

For 2018, we will be focusing on reaching out to attract new people to the event, whilst retaining the current focus on vegan education, as well as entertainment. The new venue – recently rebuilt and renovated in 2016 to new levels of comfort and facilities – provides us with an opportunity to really welcome a new crowd to VegfestUK Bristol, with 80% of the event now indoors whilst retaining our outdoor festival feel.

Feedback from our previous events shows that the majority of people are attracted to the event originally on health grounds, and in combination with the opportunity we have to reach a sports-focused crowd through the football and rugby clubs, we are very much focused on attracting new visitors with an emphasis on the benefits of a plant-based diet – both for optimum health and for performance. The top-level facilities of the Main Stand provide us with 3 big talks rooms on Level 2, which will include Plant-Based Diets: Optimum Health and Plant-Based Diets: Optimum Performance, and our guest speakers will include highly achieving athletes and performers, as well as science-based nutritionists and dietitians.

At the core of the event, we retain a focus on vegan education and our 3rd talks room, The Vegan Academy, allows us room to explore different areas of veganism, including the intersection of veganism and other social justice movements. The inclusion of the Vegan Activists Hub also provides us with a platform for up-and-coming inspirational activists.

All our speakers will be vegan, all talks will be vegan, all products at the event will be vegan, all marketing at the event will be vegan, and at the heart of our ethos is a respect for veganism as a philosophy or way of life that seeks to exclude the use of animals wherever practicable and possible.

Entertainment

VegfestUK Bristol will retain its musical influence, with 2 outdoors stages providing both live acts and dance music throughout the day and evening. In addition, the 3 talks rooms on Level 2 will become entertainment rooms after 6pm on each day, with a Blues Lounge, a Comedy Lounge and an Electro Swing Lounge. The aim of the entertainment is to provide something for all tastes without one particular genre dominating the event.

Amenities

As well as 3 concourses with room for 220 stalls indoors, 3 talks rooms (seating approximately 200 each), which become entertainment rooms in the evenings, hospitality lounges on Level 3 for guests, sponsors and supporters, and outdoor facilities including 10 caterers and approximately 30 outdoor gazebo pitches, 2 stages and a circus stage, and the Vegan Activists Hub, the venue also includes a split-level vegan pizzeria and bar, and a seated restaurant for 250 diners, as well as seating on the South Stand for around 3,000 visitors.

Access to the venue

There are limited parking options near the venue, and there is a regular bus route as well as enhanced bus services from First Bus, also around 100 cycle racks available free of charge.

Prices

Stallholders

The event will include up to 50 stalls at £200 plus VAT for traders for the weekend (£100 plus VAT for charities for the weekend). In addition, there will be up to 15 stalls provided free of charge to vegan information groups. The event aims to be inclusive for small vegan businesses, charities and campaigns, whilst also providing a high level of amenities, talks, education and entertainment, as well as visitors.

Price structure

Some people have suggested that the event should either be free or charge less to encourage more pre-vegans to attend. An event of this nature costs a lot of money to stage, and perhaps a more appropriate question to ask is not “should it be free?”, but more “who should pay for it?”. We do our best to share the high costs of this event between everyone. VegfestUK Ltd is not a charity – we employ full-time staff to run this event, and we pay above a living wage not only for our employees but also for our contractors where we can. We aim to cover expenses for our speakers and fees for all our performers, and although we are both lucky enough and reliant on a large amount of goodwill and volunteer input, nevertheless the financial implications of a temporary event of this nature in this day and age are challenging.

We believe that our price structure allows people with less as well as small businesses and charities to attend this event, and we would ask vegans especially to take advantage of our Buy One Get One Half Price ticket offers that run from January 15th 2018 to April 30th 2018, in order to bring a family member or a colleague to the event to help introduce them to the best of a vegan way of life, and to use this flagship vegan event to spread the benefits of veganism to as many people as possible.

VegfestUK Bristol has in previous years found it challenging to be sustainable financially, and we want to make sure that the event is both sustainable and secure and able to both grow and maintain a high level of both visitors’ and stallholders’ experience over the forthcoming years.

Gratitude

We are very grateful for the support that we have received over the years especially from the vegan community without whose support and assistance this event would never have been possible. We rely on the continued support of the extended vegan community and we hope that vegans especially will value this flagship event and make the most of the opportunity to use this event to introduce people to the best of a vegan way of life.

Big thanks to our first sponsors Bute Island Foods, Yaoh and Out of Hand.
