Jeremy Hess: Founder of Vegan Interactions

Jeremy Hess: Founder of Vegan Interactions

| by Jeremy Hess | Posted in VegfestUK Bristol 2018

In this guest blog, vegan activist Jeremy Hess, who is the founder of Vegan Interactions, talks about his own vegan journey and his chosen forms of vegan activism.

Jeremy spoke at the recent VegfestUK Brighton event in March 2018 and he will be speaking again at VegfestUK Bristol on both days May 26th 27th 2018 at Ashton Gate stadium – you can buy tickets to the event either in advance here or on the gate.

Four years ago I was shocked to learn the truth about the meat, dairy, and egg industries.  I didn’t just want to stop my contribution by going vegan.  I wanted to stop the needless killing of non-human animals.

I pondered how I could build vegan awareness.  I contemplated riding my bike for thousands of miles.  I thought about promoting veganism on the streets.  Instead, I did something I’d never heard of being done before…  I fasted.

Waiting to hear where to go next from my co-pilot, Stella.

I inspired twenty-one people from four different countries to eat vegan while I only drank water.

How long did I last?  I didn’t eat anything for twenty-two days.  That’s one day longer than Gandhi’s longest fast.

I thought I would grow weak when I fasted.  Instead, I meditated and my conviction to stand up for the animals grew with each passing day.

After my fast, I had several passionate discussions.  Due to several disappointments, I withdrew.  I stopped looking for conversations about veganism.

That all changed when I read Dr. Casey Taft’s ‘Motivational Methods for Vegan Advocacy.’ Casey is the primary developer of the first and only programs to stop and prevent domestic violence.  In this book he’s applied these techniques to vegan advocacy.

Casey’s book gave me the confidence to talk to others about veganism. By applying the lessons I learned from behavioural psychology I saw immediate results.  My mom and sister both went vegan.  I’ve inspired hundreds of people on the street to take veganism seriously.  Even my dogs went vegan ☺

I founded Vegan Interactions to support others to have effective conversations around veganism.  Just when I thought going vegan would be the most exciting chapter of my journey, a whole new world opened up in front of me.  I saw how I could make a difference.

If we channel our passion we can do anything.  We can build awareness on our social networks.  We can inspire vegan-curious people to sign up to support programs such as Challenge 22➕ and Veganuary.  We can sign up to be a mentor for Challenge 22➕. I like to call this form of activism ‘typtivism.’

Anonymous for the Voiceless (AV) organizes Cube of Truth outreach events.  These events for everyone – all you have to do is hold a screen or a sign.  When you’re ready you can talk to the public.  Would you like to see evidence a vegan world is coming?

Come see that ‘light-bulb moment’ happen at an AV event.

Don’t forget to have fun.  One of the ways I do this is by refueling on my other YouTube channel, Vegan Vs Food.

What’s the most exciting thing about all of this?  Anyone can do what I’ve done.  I’m an introvert and I’m now seeking out opportunities to talk about veganism.  I give talks to help empower vegans to find their voice, like Casey helped me to find mine.

I can’t wait to share what I’ve learned with the vegan community.  A vegan world is coming.  All we had to do is be heard and understood.  The only question is… are you ready?
