"How I Found My Voice"

"How I Found My Voice"

2018-05-16
| by Jeremy Hess | Posted in VegfestUK Bristol 2018

In this guest blog, vegan activist Jeremy Hess talks about his journey to becoming a vegan speaker and advocate.

Jeremy will be speaking at the upcoming VegfestUK Bristol on May 26-27 at Ashton Gate stadium – you can see Jeremy’s schedule of talks at the event on this page here. Get tickets in advance here or on the gate.

A year ago I wasn’t confident talking to others about veganism.  I’d just read ‘Motivational Methods for Vegan Advocacy’ by Casey Taft, PhD and I was excited about the theory behind communication.

Since then I’ve had thousands of interactions with the public.  I’ve found my own style which I think will work for others. That’s why I started Vegan Interactions.

The foundation of my approach is to get people thinking.  I do this by letting people talk, praising the positive in what they’re saying, building awareness, and by asking open-ended questions.  Come to my talk on Saturday for more.

My website, VeganInteractions.com, has a free video series to improve communication.  The psychology portion explains the theory. The strategy section shares how I apply this theory to my interactions.

The website also has a free mobile-friendly discussion guide.  The guide has the key concepts which have helped me as well as ideas for how to create a positive interaction.

I share good news on the Vegan Interactions Facebook page on ‘Motivational  Mondays.’ I also share regular interactions I’ve had on ‘Street Interview Saturdays.’

The Vegan Interactions closed Facebook group connects like-minded people for support.  We brainstorm how to respond to common justifications on ‘What Would You Say Wednesdays.’  We contemplate new ideas to improve our advocacy on ‘Thinking Thursdays.’

My advocacy also focuses on taking care of ourselves.  After all, it doesn’t matter how good we are at communicating if it’s not sustainable.  Come to my talk on Sunday for more.

My biggest regret is not getting active sooner.  After all my preparation I found interacting to be easier than I expected.  All it took to start was being calm and positive. I also found I can learn along the way.  Interacting is a bit like a game of chess, we aren’t meant to have all the answers.

It’s an exciting time to stand up for the animals.  With 7% of the UK being vegan and an increase of 700% over the last two years the momentum is on our side.  Each of us has the capability to inspire change.

I look forward to sharing my ideas at the upcoming Bristol Vegfest, see you there!
