VegfestUK Brighton 10th anniversary featured stallholder: Animal Aid

VegfestUK Brighton 10th anniversary featured stallholder: Animal Aid

2019-02-11
| by Editor | Posted in VegfestUK Brighton 2019

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of VegfestUK Brighton in 2019, we are running a series of blogs with some interview questions for a number of stallholders who were at our first-ever Brighton event back in 2009.

In this blog, we interview Sally Newman, head of fundraising at Animal Aid, one of the UK’s leading animal campaigning groups who has been exhibiting at VegfestUK ever since.

Wow - a whole decade - what’s changed most about your organisation?

We continue to campaign for animal rights across a number of core campaigns. The campaign area, which has changed most significantly within the last decade, has to be veganism moving into the mainstream.

But we have also seen positive developments in other campaign areas, such as the mandatory installation of CCTV in slaughterhouses in England, which Animal Aid campaigned on for almost a decade. Also, all signs of increased awareness of the issues affecting animals and a demand from more and more people to end animal suffering.

Any plans in the pipeline?

Because veganism is now so much more accessible, we are reaching new audiences; people who are coming to veganism for different reasons. We want to build on this momentum and continue to engage diverse new audiences. We also want to ensure that those coming into veganism for different reasons are aware of other animal rights issues and make them aware of animal exploitation in other areas so that they can choose to support this work too.

What’s the best thing about coming to Brighton?

Brighton has been ahead of the curve on veganism for such a long time. It’s always great to catch up with those people who we recognise, year in year out. And to see the sea, of course!

Any particular fave eating spot in Brighton?

So many to choose from! On a purely selfish note, my favourite place to eat is the Pipeline bar on Little East Street. Which is also my favourite bar in Brighton and just happens to house my favourite jukebox! I can enjoy a vegan beer, VBites burger and listen to punk classics such as the Stooges, Black Flag and the Cramps. They even name the burgers after their favourite artists! Try a Debbie Harry, Suzie Quatro or Joan Jett burger, or my favourite has to be the Nina Hagen hot dog!

How do you see things changing for veganism in the next decade?

Making sure this progress is sustainable. Ensuring that new vegans continue their journey onto supporting animal rights issues, make the connection between how we treat animals in other areas and ultimately make more and more compassionate choices.
