ARZone interviews animal advocate and researcher Trent Grassian

ARZone interviews animal advocate and researcher Trent Grassian

| by Carolyn Bailey | Posted in VegfestUK Brighton 2019

ARZone recently began a new series of interviews speaking with upcoming speakers and organisers of the VegfestUK Brighton 2019 event. We were delighted to hear from researcher and advocate for both humans and other animals, Trent Grassian to kick this series off.

Trent is a full-time researcher who has spent over a decade working in the fields of anti-racism, LGBTQIA liberation, disability rights, and animal advocacy. He recently completed a PhD in Social Policy examining vegan, vegetarian, and even reducetarian transitioners participating in UK-based campaigns, entitled: ‘A New Way of Eating: Creating Meat Reducers, Vegetarians, and Vegans’.

Trent recently completed a groundbreaking study* which drew on the experiences of vegans, vegetarians and reducetarians, exploring the central importance of socio-economic barriers in transitioning to a plant-based diet, and found that vegan advocacy is actually more effective in reducing than reducetarian advocacy. Trent discusses this research, along with the importance of goal-setting, and the recent increase in human saviourism in the animal movement in this important interview.

Trent will discuss all of these issues, and more when he speaks at VegfestUK Brighton this weekend.

* Appendix – Study on Meat Reduction and Vegan Promotion

The study worked with seven reduction and vegan campaigns and tracked participants' dietary habits and goals at multiple points over a six month period, as well as their reported motivators and barriers.

The report is designed for anyone interested in promoting sustainable consumption, meat reduction, vegetarianism, and/or veganism and includes an overview of key findings and recommendations for future research, campaigns, and policy.

Findings include: (a) the greater likelihood that participants would meet their goals if they were stricter (e.g. vegan), while most meat reducers only reduced temporarily; (b) the importance of animal protection as a motivator in achieving sustained dietary change; (c) the key role social impacts play in the transition process; (d) a lack of diversity within the campaign populations; and (e) the need for varied and targeted strategies to address the variety of types of consumers and transition journeys.
