Empowering our children for a plant-based future: Shambhu's cookery classes

Empowering our children for a plant-based future: Shambhu's cookery classes

2019-03-15
| by Shambhu's | Posted in VegfestUK Brighton 2019

In this guest blog, vegan chef Nishma Shah from award-winning caterers Shambhu’s talks about their summer holiday children's cookery classes.

Nishma will be demonstrating some of her favourite dishes at the upcoming VegfestUK Brighton on both days March 23-24 at the Brighton Centre.

Today, our children are, rightly, deeply concerned about the many ethical issues we currently face, and want our leaders to take meaningful action. This was clearly visible when only last month school children made headlines as they staged protests against climate change in towns and cities across the UK and in other parts of Europe; and there are more planned.

Of course, one powerful yet relatively simple and practical step, which would significantly address the multitude of ethical issues including climate change, deforestation, species extinction, food poverty, water pollution, compassion towards and rights of animals, human health, etc, is a shift towards plant-based agriculture, diet and lifestyle. The world of vegan food is rich in its variety, style and culture, as well as being very tasty, nutritious and healing, not to mention compassionate towards non-human life.

So give your children a head start in the increasingly important and growing area of vegan food.

If your child is 8 to 14 years old, he or she can participate in Shambhu’s summer holiday vegan cookery course, "A Culinary Trip Around the World!".  This is a series of fun, hands-on, inspiring, empowering, educational classes.  The children cook several mouth-watering dishes from scratch using fresh ingredients and based on culinary styles from different regions of the world.  Along the journey, they learn valuable food prep and cooking skills, and gain knowledge on relevant topics such as nutrition, spices, flavour-pairing and how to minimise food waste.

Vegan Chef Nishma Shah, of the award-winning Shambhu’s (providing vegan catering and education services), has been running children’s summer holiday cookery classes for several years, and they have consistently been a hit with the young student chefs:

“I do not like aubergine, but when we made it in the baba ganoush, it was tasty!”

“I enjoyed learning and making new food, and I also made new friends.”

“It was interesting that eggs could be replaced so easily for a better option.”

“I really would like to do it again next year and I hope I learn just as much.”

“I loved eating the food I made!”

The classes are held over five mornings during the first week of August, in north-west London. To gain the most benefit, Nishma recommends that parents enrol their children onto all five sessions, but this is not compulsory.

The itinerary for the next round-the-world culinary voyage from 5th to 9th August is:

Monday: Marvellous Mexican
Tuesday: Stylish Italian
Wednesday: Luscious Lebanese
Thursday: Delicate oriental dumplings
Friday: Decadent desserts

Nishma also teaches vegan masterclasses for adults, for Made In Hackney, with her next one being on Sunday 12th May.  For further information, visit:

You can meet Nishma at VegfestUK Brighton (Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March), where she will be hosting the cookery demos area featuring many demonstrations by various talented vegan chefs. Nishma will also be performing two of her own demonstrations:
