Interview with ETHCS co-owner Bob Love

Interview with ETHCS co-owner Bob Love

2019-03-05
| by Editor | Posted in VegfestUK Brighton 2019

In this interview blog, we speak to Bob Love, co-owner of vegan clothing company ETHCS. We ask him about the history of ETHCS, their new ranges, and future direction, as well as advice for new vegans.

ETHCS will be exhibiting at the upcoming VegfestUK Brighton, and Bob will be speaking in the Vegan Activists Hub on Saturday at 12pm

When did ETHCS form?

We formed in January 2016, under the original name of Ethics and Antics, and then rebranded to ETHCS in February 2017. This was because we wanted to have a sharper, shorter name, with the concept being that 'there is no 'i' in ETHCS' - emphasising that being ethical doesn't involve someone benefiting themselves at the expense of others.

How many people working with ETHCS right now?

At present, there are 3 of us. Benj (@benjonearth), Ellis (@ellisgoodridge) and myself Bob (@familyfreedomvlogs)

Tim Shieff - what really happened?

He'd expressed to us his desire to return to eating animal products, which of course we were very upset with, and disagreed with. We knew too that this could certainly have a severe negative effect on the company, as we were certain that the vegan community that has supported us for so long would not be willing to support us if one of us was no longer vegan. Therefore a decision had to be made for the benefit of us all as individuals, the company, and our customers.

It was an extremely tough decision, but we felt it was a courageous and necessary one.

It's an amicable split. right? still friends?

Tim knew too that it was the best decision for all concerned, so yes it was amicable. Our friendship is slightly different as we don't all work together and he feels differently about veganism now, so of course, that's going to change things a bit.

Advice to new vegans?

Do your research. Not just to confirm you're on the right path, but to empower yourself with the knowledge of why you're vegan, and then be in a position to help others. And be the most positive, happy, vibrant vegan example you can be, so that you make veganism an irresistible and inexcusable option for others.

Any new ranges on the way?

Yes, we have some special animal charity collaboration tees, and we hope to release the 1st of those very soon. Also, for the 1st time we are working on some ethically made leggings, which will be made from mostly recycled materials.

And finally - is there a new direction emerging for ETHCS?

Our values and aims remain the same, to continue to create ethical and sustainable clothing, and through that promote veganism and ethical, sustainable living. If anything, we want to become even more ethical, ensuring that all processes around the way we work are doing as least harm possible.
