Veganism for later life to be discussed in Mature Zone at VegfestUK London 2019

Veganism for later life to be discussed in Mature Zone at VegfestUK London 2019

2019-09-02
| by V for Life | Posted in VegfestUK London 2019

V… for Life begins at 50! The Mature Zone is the go-to place for all aspects of veganism in later life.

With pay-as-you-feel vegan refreshments and drinks served the periphery, on top of seating.

Proudly curated and hosted by V for Life

Feeling the effects of overcrowding? Why not sit back and enjoy a cuppa in our Mature Zone? Nab some great free publications, enjoy an attractive array of vegan bakes, and listen in to inspiring cookery demonstrations, and thought-provoking films and presentations.

Through popular demand, we have expanded the number of veggie socials, which are the perfect opportunity to meet like-minded souls.

Refreshments served outside the Mature Zone are offered on a 'pay as you feel' basis, and any profits will be used to support the charity's work.

There'll also be plenty of free information to hand about:

  • Protecting your vegan identity throughout life
  • VfL's vegan and vegetarian grants
  • Vegan dinners to your door
  • Care homes that care
  • Volunteering opportunities: How to be a friend to your elders.

Talks and workshops will run from 12pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday.

Sessions and speakers

Saturday

VfL film shorts: If I get dementia, will they serve me meat?

V for Life’s film shorts draw attention to two serious questions that concern older vegans and vegetarians. Will my lifestyle and beliefs be understood and respected in a care environment? And if I get dementia, will they serve me meat? We urge you to get informed – if you aren't already – about these important issues. One day, there will be clear policies and regulations about how to support older vegans and vegetarians. V for Life is trying to make that day come sooner.

Oliver Bragg – Simple sandwich fillers

Get inspired with easy and tasty sandwich filler ideas. Enjoy great textures and flavours including ‘chickpea’ tuna salad and the ultimate vegan smoked ‘salmon’ and cream cheese bagel recipe.

Vegan cheese party sponsored by Stockans

In a London Mature Zone first – a vegan cheese tasting event to tickle your taste buds! Whether you prefer milder cheese, or cheese with a kick, come along and rate our line-up on taste, texture, and even closeness to their dairy counterparts.

Dr Alicja Baczynska – How to avoid age-related decline

Many of us wonder how to avoid age related decline in physical and cognitive function. This talk will provide insight into mechanisms of ageing, frailty and multi-morbidity from a perspective of an NHS hospital doctor. You will receive an overview of the newest research supportive of a plant-based diet and other healthy lifestyle factors in the maintenance of holistic well-being in older age.

Amanda Woodvine – Age-related issues might force you to abandon your veganism. Take action today

People are sometimes surprised to discover that a charity for older vegans exists. Some even respond by asking ‘Why does there need to be a charity for older vegans?’ As V for Life celebrates its 11-year-anniversary, its Chief Executive reflects on how far the charity has come, and the key challenges faced by the older vegans of today.

Sunday

VfL film shorts, feat. comedian Dave Spikey

Amanda Woodvine – Developing a movement that is inclusive to older vegans

In recent years, the number of vegans and meat-reducers has SOARED worldwide. At the same time, globally, the population aged 60 or over is growing faster than all younger age groups. This begs a number of questions: How inclusive is the vegan movement to older adults? And if I get dementia, will they serve me meat? Find out more in this fascinating talk by Amanda Woodvine, Chief Executive of UK charity, V for Life.

Oliver Bragg – Simple health-giving salads

How to prepare and dress nutrient packed salads including seasonal ideas, Panzanella, and Japanese style salads and dressings.

Yasmine El-Gabry – Call to action: Will your loved ones’ vegan beliefs be respected in care?

Have you ever heard of a vegan with dementia being served meat while in care?

At V for Life, we feel that beliefs should be respected, whether religious or philosophical in nature. Should you experience any capacity issues, or cognitive losses, your vegan beliefs should be protected then, too. So, we are taking this issue to Parliament – but we need your evidence.

This autumn, V for Life is launching an inquiry through the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Vegetarianism and Veganism. The inquiry will investigate cases of individuals being fed in a way that contradicts their beliefs when they have capacity issues or cognitive losses. Learn about how to get involved, make change, and advocate for your rights.
