Better Nature tempeh: plant-based and protein-rich alternative to meat

Better Nature tempeh: plant-based and protein-rich alternative to meat

| by Better Nature | Posted in VegfestUK London 2019

In this guest blog, the team from Better Nature, who exhibited at VegfestUK London 2019 recently, talks about the making of tempeh, a fantastic plant-based alternative to meat that is protein-rich and gluten-free. They also discuss their plans with their own brand of tempeh in the coming months ahead.

What is tempeh?

It's the world's best kept protein secret! Put simply, tempeh (pronounced tem-pay) fermentation takes any legume, nut, grain or seed (typically made using soybeans) and transforms them into an even better food source.

Tempeh fermentation is an ancient process, developed in Java, Indonesia over 300 years ago, which binds the selected legume, nut, grain or seed into a meaty block that’s super high in protein and fibre, naturally gluten-free and great for the gut. What's more, tempeh is totally plant-based and planet friendly - what's not to love?

Tempeh has been a common food in Java for centuries and acts as a vital protein source for many Indonesian communities. However, as it’s typically sold in fruit carts on the side of the road, a lot of Indonesians perceive it as a low-quality, basic food, not the game-changing protein source we know and love.

At Better Nature, it’s our mission to change this and to bring tempeh to the mainstream in Indonesia and further afield, as well use it as the basis for all-natural, delicious protein-packed meat alternative products. As part of this, we’re working with our charity partner, the Indonesian Tempe Movement, to help educate people in Indonesia on the power of tempeh, as well as improving accessibility to it.

If you need yet another reason to try out tempeh, it’s also very easy to cook with! You can fry it, steam it, bake it - basically whatever you can do with meat. While tempeh has its own delicious, nutty flavour, it also takes on other flavours really well. Our favourite tempeh recipe is Tempe Kecap - a typical Indonesian dish that’s super tasty and protein-rich!

We’ll be launching our first range delicious tempeh products very shortly (with many more in the pipeline, including a tempeh burger!), so keep your eyes peeled to try the tempeh-ting tastiness for yourselves!
